LETTERS TO A. R. WALLER: letters of scholars, critics, etc., chiefly on literary matters, the majority being addressed to Alfred Rayney Waller (two letters from whom are at 43681, ff. 167, 230), Assistant Secretary 1902-1911, and Secretary from 1911 until his death in 1922, to the Syndics of the Cambridge University Press and joint-editor with Sir A. W. Ward of the Cambridge History of English Literature; 1898-1922, n.d.
- Scope & Content:
-
A few letters to Ward are included in 43681. The correspondents, whose names are given in the Index to this Catalogue, are mainly contributors to the Cambridge History of English Literature or authors of works published by the Cambridge University Press. But letters of a more personal nature from Thomas Hutchinson, editor of Wordsworth (a number of which are addressed to Mrs Waller) and from George Tyrrell, S.J., the modemist, together account for two-thirds of the whole correspondence; Tyrrell's letters, extracts from a few of which are printed by M. D. Petre, Autobiography and Life of George Tyrrell, ii, pp- 142, 175, 186, 193, largely concern the religious censorship imposed on his writings, and particularly his allegorical pamphlet The Civilizing of the Matafanus, which was printed in 1902 under Waller's name (see M. D. Petre, op. cit., ii, pp. 142, 390-393). For other correspondence of Tyrrell see Add. MSS. 44927-44931, 52367 and 52368. Paper; fF. 246, 259. Quarto. 1898-1922. Presented by Mrs A. R. Waller and Harold Hannyngton Child, Esq.
