437I5. HANDBOOK OF A FRANCISCAN CONFESSOR, probably an Observant (see artt. 8, 10, 11), compiled in Italy, perhaps at or near Bologna (see artt. 2, 5, 10); late 15th cent. The contents consist mainly of extracts from the works of St Antoninus, Archbishop of Florence 1446-1459, from earlier writings on canon law, and from bulls and other papal pronouncements, relating to the three orders of St Francis or to subjects connected with the hearing of confessions, absolution and excommunication. Latin and Italian. The contents include:-
(1) St Antoninus, Confessionale ('Defecerunt'), book II, beg. 'Postquam ille qui uult confiteri'. Latin. Lacks single leaves after ff. 7, II ; f. 2, misbound, should follow f. 16. The chapters 'circa nonum preceptum' and 'circa religiosos et religiosas' that are omitted from their proper places on ff. 6 and 28, appear later in the MS. at ff. 50b-51, 41-43b, respectively, although the latter is imperfect at the end by the loss of a following leaf. The forms of absolution (ff. 33b-34b) differ from those found in the printed editions of this Confessionale. ff. 1-34b.
(2) Memoranda concerning various points of canon law, including an abstract (f. 36) of a bull of Pope Eugenius IV relating to the Poor Clares, dated Bologna, 7 Dec. 1437 (Bullarium Franciscanum, new ser., i, 1929, no. 342, 'Ad ea quae'). Latin. ff. 34b-36b.
