LETTERS, MAINLY ADDRESSED TO THOMAS COOPER al. COWPER, of Wellingborough, mathematician (b. 1716, d. 1778), from Henry Beighton, F.R.S., editor of The Ladies' Diary; from the latter's widow, Elizabeth, who continued the editorship after his death in 1743; and from Robert Heath, mathematician (see Dict. Nat. Biogr.), who acted as Mrs Beighton's deputy until 1753 and also edited a rival publication, The Palladium; 2 Apr. 1739- 24 Mar. 1767. The contents refer chiefly to the management of these periodicals, Cowper's contributions to them, and questions of mathematical astronomy arising therefrom. Some draft letters, notes and verse in his hand are also included. A biographical sketch of Thomas Cowper, with extracts from his correspondence and papers, then in the possession of his grandson,
W. Cowper, is included in John Cole, History and Antiquities of Wellingborough, 1837, pp. 268-278. Paper; ff. 74. Folio. Presented by William Cowper, Esq., M.B.E., formerly Headmaster of Jamaica College, a descendant of Thomas Cowper.
