GRAMMATICAL WORKS, in Latin. Two separate compilations, bound together in the Middle Ages, of which the first comprises art. i and the second artt. 2-5. Contents as follows:-
(1) Part of the Verborum Derivationes of Uguccione Pisano, Bishop of Ferrara (d. 1210). Beg. imperfectly in the article on 'Monos' with the words 'in commune viventes'. Breaks Off (f. 28b) in the article on 'Sum' with the words 'sexta ab adventu domini', the remaining leaves being now only stubs. For other MSS. of the work, of which the chief in the British Museum is Add. MS. 18380, see A. Marigo, I Codici Manoscritti delle 'Derivationes' di Uguccione Pisano, Rome, 1936. ff. 1-44.
(2) The first part of a treatise on the eight parts of speech, beg. 'Effectum grammatici querere scientes [sic, for sitientes]'. Another copy of the work, in Worcester Cathedral MS. F. 61, ff. 193b-197b, is there assigned to the authorship of Richard de Hambury, the late 13th cent. Oxford grammar master, for whom see A. B. Emden, Biographical Register of the University of Oxford, ii, pp. 861 and xviii. Ends imperfectly in the fourth section, on the preposition (= Worcester Cath. MS. F. 61, f. 196, col. 1, at foot) with the loss of the three following sections on the adverb, interjection, and conjunction. ff. 45-46b.
(3) The latter part (end of ch. vi.-ch. xvi) of a treatise on the parts of the verb. Ch. vii, on the gerund, beg. (f. 47, col. 1) 'Septima doctrina sedem vendicet luculentam'. Ends (f. 49b) 'futuri passivi videlicet moliendus'. ff. 47-49 b.
(4) Treatise on sixteen difficult points of grammar, which are listed at the beginning and mainly concern the Verb. Beg. 'ut ignorancie rubigo'. ff. 49 b-55.
(5) Treatise on Syntax, in seventeen chapters, listed at the beginning. Beg. 'Quoniam gramatice intrinseca congnitio (sic)'. Ends imperfectly in ch. x ('de verbis substantivis et vocativis') with the words 'substantiam uniuscuiusque quasi'. ff. 55-66b. Vellum; ff. 66. 355 mm. x 245 mm. xiv cent. Ruled double columns. Gatherings originally of 10 and 12 leaves, but numerous excisions have been made: before repair and rebinding the collation was 1, iig lacks 6, iii, iv lacks 6 (7-12 stubs), v (all stubs), vi, vii, viii" lacks g-12. Art. is written in a small bookhand with initials flourished in blue and red, or red and violet, and catchwords. Artt. 2-5 are in charter hand with spaces left blank for initials.
