HAMPSHIRE SEALS: impressions in red wax, on six leaves of paper, of the seals of sixty-one (originally seventy) towns and families in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, collected in July and August 1686, apparently in connection with a heraldic Visitation of the County made in that year by Sir Henry St George, Clarenceux, of which the original record is in the College of Arms. The impressions (ff. 1-6), which are accompanied by brief notes of the identity, ownership, etc., of each seal and an index of names (ff. 7-8) (apparently in the hand of Robert Dale [Richmond Herald 1721], who, with William Allain, assisted St George) are numbered consecutively up to no. 71. Owing to the loss of a leaf containing the first nine, the series now begins at no. 10 and
no. 24 is vacant. The itinerary of the Visitation appears from the order of the impressions and the notes (which occasionally also give the dates on which individual seals were presented) to have been as follows: Winchester, 19 July (no. 14, etc.); Andover, 21 July (nos. 18, 20, etc.); Romsey (no. 21); Lymington (no. 22); Christchurch (nos. 23, 24); Southampton, 29 July (no. 30, etc.); Newport, 1. of Wight, 3 Aug. (nos. 38, 46, etc.); Portsmouth, 6 Aug. (nos. 47, 49, etc.); Petersfield (no. 57, etc.); Basingstoke (no. 63, etc.); Beaurepaire in Sherborne St John, 16 Aug. (no. 70, etc.). The names of the owners of the seals will be found in the Index to this catalogue. Paper (the leaves now mounted and kept in a box); ff. 8. 185 mm. x 145 mm. A.D. 1686. Belonged to Sir Thomas Phillipps, Bart. (MS. 29792; Sotheby's sale-cat., 24-25 June 1935, lot 160). Presented by Gabriel Wells, Esq.
