CORRESPONDENCE, LITERARY MANUSCRIPTS AND OTHER PAPERS OF SIR CHARLES WENTWORTH DILKE, 2nd Bart. 1869, P.C., M.P. (b. 1843, d. 1911). The material was arranged on acquisition in ninety-four volumes, but in 1957 documents which had previously been reserved from public use (together with others which were presented by the Rt. Hon. Harold Macmillan, M.P.) were incorporated into the collection which was rearranged and expanded into one hundred and sixty-eight volumes, of which Vols. I-XCIV are described below; Vols. XCV-CLXV are Add. MSS. 49385-49455 and Vols. CLXVI-CLXVIII are Add. MSS. 49610-49612. Very many individual items in this collection have been badly torn, and Dilke's explanation of one specific case of such mutilation will be found in his own and his secretaries' evidence during the trial of the divorce suit Crawford v. Crawford (The Queen's Proctor Intervening), viz. Add. MSS. 49439, f. 85; 49441, ff. 19, 29. Manuscript annotations by Dilke himself, his secretaries and his biographers will be found throughout the collection. Some of the original letters from Dilke to his correspondents (e.g. Cardinal Manning) are included. Correspondence of members of Dilke's family also occurs, including papers (Add. MS. 43899) of his grandfather, Charles Wentworth Dilke, the Editor of the Athenaeum, and (Add. MSS. 43903-43908) of his second wife Emilia Francis, née Strong, the widow of the Rev. Mark Pattison and a historian of French art: the latter (which date from both before and after Lady Dilke's second marriage) are

complementary to others in Add. MS. 45665 and were used by Dilke in his Memoir of his wife prefixed to his edition of her Book of the Spiritual Life (1905). Included also in the collection are many typewritten copies of documents preserved elsewhere. The papers were used by Stephen Lucius Gwynn, M.P., and Gertrude Mary Tuckwell (C.H. 1930) for their The Life of the Rt Hon. Sir Charles W. Dilke, Bart., M.P. (2 vols., 1917) and also by Roy Jenkins, M.P., for his Sir Charles Dilke: A Victorian Tragedy (1958). Ninetyfour volumes. Folio (unless otherwise stated), arranged as follows:-
