ACCOUNT BY JOHN SAVERY, of Butcombe Court, co. Som., of the family of Savery of Totnes and (1614) of Shilstone, near Modbury, co. Devon, from 1511, with a pedigree (ff. 2, 3); 24 July 1809 (f. 100b), with a preface dated June 1810 (f. 1). A few additions have been made by his son Charles, i864 (mainly at ff. 101, 102), grandson, Charles Evelyn, 1888 (ff. 102b, 103b), and others (ff. 106- 111). Included in the account are extracts from the family papers (some of which were later owned by John Waller, bookseller; see his catalogue no. 167, 1896, pp. iii, iv), chiefly relating to the activities of Christopher Savery (d. 1660), his son Sen,ington (d. 1689), and grandson Christopher (d. 1708), as Justices of the Peace, etc., for co. Devon, and to the scientific researches of Thomas Savery, F.R.S., engineer (d. 1715), the inventor of a water-raising machine, and Servington Savery (d. circ. 1744). The names of the writers of letters transcribed will be found in the Index to this Catalogue. A transcript of the present MS., then in the possession of Edward Windeatt of Totnes, was used by R. Jenkins in an account of Thomas Savery's inventions in Transactions of the Devonshire Association, xlv, 1913, p. 346. A book of poems of the family is Add. MS. 52489. Paper; ff. iii + III. Quarto. XIX cent. At f. 104 is a letter from John Herman Merivale to John Savery, returning the manuscript after inspection, 4 Jan. 1821. Belonged to John Eliot Hodgkin, F.S.A. (bookplate, f. i; Setheby's sale-cat., 18 May 1914, lot 1371), who also owned the origins (Add. MS. 38856, ff. 71-74) of the correspondence concerning Quakers at ff. 55 b-58. Presented by the Kyancutta Museum, South Australia.
