MISCELLANEOUS theological treaties, viz.: 1. "Passio beati Thome martyris Cantuariensis archiepiscopi" : the anonymous "Passio" printed from two other MSS. by J. A. Giles, Vita S. Thomae, ii, 1847, p. 137, Migne, Pair. Lat. cxc, col. 317, and by J. C. Robertson, Materials for the hist. of T. Becket, iv, 1879, p. 186 (Bibl. Hag. Lat. no. 8209). In the passage noted by Giles (Migne, col. 319, note 29) the present text agrees with the Paris as against the Bodl. MS., but with some differences. Beg. "Digne, fratres karissimi, huius diei preclara festiuitas." f. 1.
2. "Summa magistri Iohannis Beleht de ecclesiasticis officiis" : the Rationale Divinorum Offciorum of John Beleth. Like all the extant MSS., it differs widely from the printed text (Migne, ccii, col. 13, etc.), which is indeed a free paraphrase by the editor, C. Laurimann (see B. Hauréau, Notices et Extraits, i, 1890, pp. 88-97). The text of the present MS. closely resembles that of Cotton MS. Vitell. A. xi, f. 3, and represents a revision of Beleths work by some later editor; see ff. 50 b, 55, where statements by Beleth are contrasted with those of other writers (on f. 50 h Mauricius [de Sully], Bishop of Paris, 1160-1196, is thus mentioned). Royal MS.
7 C. vii, f. 23, probably gives Beleth's original text. Beg. "In primitiua ecclesia." f. 3 b.
3. " Libellus de uita et interfectione gloriosi comitis Flandrie Karoli the Life of Charles the Good, Count of Flanders (d. 1127), by Walter, Archdeacon of Térouanne. Printed in Migne, clxvi, col. 901, etc. (Bibl. Hag. Lat., no. 1573). Prologue beg. "Domino suo et patri . . . Iohanni sanete Teruannensis ecclesie episcopo, frater Walterus." Life beg. "Anno itaque uerbi incarnati millesimo centesimo uigesimo septimo." Colophon, "Explicit libellus a domno Waltero venerabili Morinensis ecclesie archidiacono editus de uita et interfectione gloriosi comitis Flandrie Karoli et de uindicta in interfectores eius iusto dei iudicio terribiliter exerta (sic)." f. 62 b.
4. "Vita Karoli magni regis imperatoris edita ab Einhardo abbate" : the life of Charlemagne by Einhardus or Eginhard. Printed in Migne, xcvii, col. 27, etc. (B. H. L. no. 1580). The prologue is here omitted. The text agrees with the MSS. of Pertz's Class B in omitting the mention of the death of Roland (Migne, col. 34). Beg. "Gens Merouingorum, de qua Franci reges sibi creare soliti erant" f. 75 b.
5. "Vita sancti Augustini episcopi" : the Life of St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo, by Possidius, Bishop of Calama. Printed in Migne, xxxii, col. 33, etc. (B.H.L. no. 785). The letter to Honoratus, of which in Migne (col. 60 ff.) only the earlier part appears, is here given in full. Followed by (a) the "Acta Ecelesiastica" concerning the appointment of Heraclius as Augustine's successor in the bishopric (Migne, xxxiii, col. 966, as Epistola ccxiii). Beg. "Gloriosissimis Theodosio xiimo et Ualentiniano Augusto iterum consulibus." f. 99b; (b) Beg. "Beatus Augustinus dum in Yponiensi sepultus esset regione" : an account of the second translation of Augustine. This work is not noted in B.H.L. It occurs also in Add. MS. 35110, f. 29 b (in the description in Cat. of Additions, 1894-1899, p. 160, for "first" read "second") as a set of lectiones. There also it follows the Life by Possidius, but is preceded by a list of Augustine's works. f. 101. Prologue beg. "Inspirante rerum omnium facto[re]." Life beg. "Ex prouintia ergo (deleted) Affricana." f. 84.
6. "Translatio sancti Nicholai episcopi et confessoris" : the translation of St. Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, to Bari (A.D. 1087), by Nicephorus (B.H.L. no. 6179). A somewhat fuller text is in Harley MS. 3097, f. 122, where, as here, the prologue is omitted. Beg. "Igitur dum omnipotens deus propensiori atque archano censuisset consilio." f. 101 b.
7. Anonymous commentary on the Song of Songs. Prologue (with rubric "Prologus in Cantica Canticorum") beg. "Canticum amoris amanti amabile est." Commentary beg. "Partitiones uel capitula in cantica canticorum idcirco necessaria." f. 102 b.
8. The tract "De locis sanctis terrae Ierusalem" of Rorgo Fretellus, Archdeacon of Antioch. This work, which passes under the name of Fretellus, seems in reality to be an edition by him of an earlier anonymous treatise, printed by M. de Vogüé, Les Églises de la Terre Sainte, p. 412. For Fretellus see T. Tobler, Theoderici Libellus de Locis Sanctis, 1865, p. 151 ff., Serapeum, xiv, pp. 134-7, xv, p. 368, xix, pp. 101-5, 176, xxvi, 106-7, R. Röhricht, Bibl. Geogr. Pal. 1890, pp. 33-5. The texts vary greatly; the present one differs from the normal type (Migne, clv, col. 1039) in being dedicated, not to Raymond, Count of Toulouse (? v, 1148-1194), but to H[enry Zdik], Bishop of Olmütz, 1126-1150 (so too three of the MSS. mentioned by Röhricht, op. cit. p. 35), and in giving the list of "mansiones" of the Israelites in the desert (so too a Vatican MS. mentioned in Österr. Vierteljahresschr. f. Kath. Theol. vii, p. 400), contained in the anonymous treatise, but usually wanting in Fretellus. For others see Cotton MSS. Nero C. ii, f. 101, Cal. A. iii, f. 21 (dedication in this MS. omitted), Arundel MS. 291, f. 68 (do.), Harley MS. 5373, f. 53 b (dedication to Roderic, Count of Toledo); Harley 3113, f. 126, is the same text as in de Vogüé, as far as "quasi tribus miliariis" (p. 414). Prologue beg. "Reuerentissimo (sic) patri et domino H[enrico] dei gratia Olomacensium antistiti R[orgo] Fretellus stola iocunditatis." Treatise beg. "Modo autem reuerende domine mi." Imperfect, ending in the 34th "mansio" (leaves lost). f. 121 b.
9. Part of the "Collationes" of John Cassianus, viz. Paphnutius, Daniel (f. 132 b), Serapion (f. 140), Theodore (f. 149 b), collations iii-vi (Migne, xlix, coll. 557-668, Corpus Script. Eccl. Lat. xiii, 1886, cd. Petschenig, pp. 67-176). As art. 8 is incomplete and a new hand appears here, f. 124 being numbered 130, this must be from another MS., which doubtless contained the beginning of the work. The text resembles Petschenig's D, with which it regularly agrees against the other MSS. Where D is corrected the present MS. usually agrees with the corrected text. Beg. (coll. iii) "In illo sanctorum choro." f. 124.
10. "Liber de diuersis uirtutibus et uitiis," by Alcuin. Printed in Migne, ci, col. 614. The dedicatory epistle and "peroratio" are omitted. Beg. "Primo omnium querendum est, fratres, homini." f. 157b.
11. "Sermo sancti Augustini de misericordia" : the sermon numbered cv a among the supposititious sermons, Migne, xxxix, col. 1949. Beg. "Qvaliter nos inuicem diligere debeamus." f. 170.
12. "Sermo sancti Iohannis episcopi qualiter homo confiteri debeat deo delicta sua et semper secreta cordis sui perscrutari." What St. John is referred to is uncertain ; the sermon does not seem to occur among Chrysostom's works. Beg. "Misericordia, fratres karissimi, peccatorum est remedium." f. 171 b.
13. "De imploratione misericordie dei qui iniquitatem suam agnoscit" : an anonymous sermon. Beg. "Rogat Dauid ut multum ab iniquitate sua lauetur." f. 172 b.
14. "De contemptu huius seculi sententia sancti Clementis" : the sermon elsewhere attributed to St. Augustine (Migne, xxxix, col. 1963, supposititious sermon no. cx a) and to Faustus Rhegiensis (ib. lviii, col. 887, serinon viii). Beg. "Modo, fratres karissimi, cum diuina lectio." f. 173 b.
15. "Sermo sancti Cesarii ad monachos" ; variously attributed to Caesarius (x, Migne, lxvii, col. 1067) and Eucherius (ix, ib. 1, col.
855). Beg. "Videte uocationem uestram, fratres karissimi." f. 174.
16. "Sententie de opusculis sancti Ieronimi ad monachos" : the so-called "Homilla ad Monachos" included among Jerome's supposititious works and made up of extracts from his writings. Printed in Migne, xxx, col. 311, etc, Beg. "Alii festinant ad celestia." f. 175b.
17. "Tractatus saucti Augustini episcopi de obedientia the pseudo- Augustinian sermon printed in Migne, xl, col. 1221. Beg. "Nichil ita deo placet quomodo obedientia." f. 180.
18. Death and miracles of St. Nicholas of Myra, viz. :(a) "Obitus sancti Nicholai episcopi" (B.H.L. no. 6154). Other copies are in Harley MS. 3097, ff. 58-60, Cotton MS. Vesp. D. ii, ff. 57 b-58 b, and Add. MS. 36737, ff. 136-137, the text represented in which differs markedly in one or two places from that of the present MS. Beg. "Cvm igitur diuersis miraculis atque uirtutibus." f. 181 b ; (b) "De quodam qui sancto Nicholao uas aureum deuouit" (B.H.L. no. 6172). Printed in Smedt, Anal. Bollandiana, ii, p. 151. The first sentence, beg. "Igitur opere precium," is here annexed to (a). Beg. "Cum longe lateque uirtutum." f. 183 :(c) "De Christiano qui mutuo aurum accepit a Iudeo" (B.H.L. no. 6174). Printed in Anal. Boll. ii, p. 153. Beg. "Extitit preterea alius uir, qui mercimoniis intentus." f. 184 b;-(d) " De imagine sancti Nicholai flagellata a Iudeo" (B.H.L. nos. 6163-6165). Printed in Mombritius, Sanctuarium, ii, 168, col. 2 (without the short prologue), etc. Other copies are in Harley MS. 3097, ff. 60-61, Cotton MS. Vesp. D. ii, ff. 58 b-59 b, Add. MS. 36737, ff. 137 b-138 b. The present MS. differs considerably in one or two places from the text represented by these three MSS., which in the main agrees with Mombritius. Beg. "Restat autem adhuc quod . . . Cum de Affrice partibus Wandalorum exercitus." f. 186;(e) "Miraculum de puero Adeodato" (B.H.L. no. 6169). Printed in Catal. Codicum Hag. Bibl. Regiae Bruxellensis, pars 1, tom. i, p. 257, but in a shorter, form (in B.H.L. no. 6168), omitting the latter part. Beg. "Si deuotionis uestre, fratres karissimi . . . Beatus itaque et electus." f. 187b;(f) "De Priore quem sanctus Nicholaus flagellauit" (B.H.L. no. 6209). Printed in Catal. Codicum Hag. Lat. . . . Bibl. Nat. Paris, i, p. 510. Beg. "Inter innumera uirtutum insignia." f. 190 b.
19. "Uita beate Marie" : the supposititious epistle of St. Jerome, sometimes called the "Evangelium de Nativitate Mariae." Printed in Migne, xxx, col. 297, Tischendorf, Evangelia Apocrypha, 1876, p. 113, etc. (B.H.L. nos. 5343, 5344). Prol. beg. "Petitis a me ut uobis rescribam." Life beg. "Igitur beata et gloriosa semper uirgo Maria." f. 191 b.
20. "Miraculum de genitrice dei reuelatum per quendam abbatem in mari": the legend of the command given to Helsinus [or Elsinus], Abbot of Ramsey, to celebrate the feast of the Conception of the B. V. Mary. Taken from Pseudo-Anselm, Sermo de Conceptione Beatae Mariae, see Migne, clix, cols. 319, 320. The present text consists of the second and third paragraphs of the sermon, with an addition of several lines at the conclusion. Another version of the legend is in Cotton MS. Cleop. C. x, f. 138b (see Catal. of Romances, ii p. 614). Beg. "Tempore illo quo diuine placuit pietati." f. 194 b.
21. "Opusculum beati Ieronimi de captiuo monacho": The Vita Malchi of St. Jerome, Migne, xxiii, col. 53, etc., but omitting the preface ("qui navali praelio ... explicemus") and paraphrasing the opening sentences (beg. "Maronia triginta ferme millibus"). Imperfect (leaves lost), ending at "Verte in te gladium" (Migne, col. 56). Beg. "Cvm ego adhuc adolescens morarer in Syria." f. 195b.
22. The writings of Sulpicius Severus concerning St. Martin of Tours. Printed in Migne, xx, col. 159, Corpus Script. Eccl. Lat. i (ed.
C. Halm), p. 109, etc. The present MS. agrees with those of Halm's second class (AF). lt includes (a) "Epistola Seueri ad Desiderium de uita sancti Martini ad (sic) se, conscripta" : the epistle dedicatory. Beg. "Seuerus Desiderio Ego quidem, frater unanimis." f. 197 ;(b) "Capitula libri primi de uita et uirtutibus sancti Martini" : a table of chapters. f. 197;-(c) "Uita beati Martini episcopi." Prologue beg. "Plerique mortalium studio et glorie." Life beg. "Igitur Martinus Sabbarie Pannoniarum oppido." f. 197 b ; (d) "Epistola Seueri ad Eusebium presbiterum postea episcopum." Beg. "Epistola Seueri ad socrum suam Bassulam qualiter sanctus Martinus de hoe mundo recesserit." Beg. "Svlpicius Seuerus Bassule parenti . . . Imperfect (leaf lost), ending at "et ad Martinum nostrum, Galle, redeamus. Tum" (Migne, col. 221, Halm, p. 215). f. 228 b. Vellum (paper fly-Ieaves); ff. iii + 233. 11 3/4 in. x 8 1/2 in. XII cent. Gatherings mostly of 8 leaves, but some of 5, 6, and 9. Double columns. See. fol. "insurgerent." Three different MSS. seem to be represented, the first ff. 1-123 (the first gathering, ff. 1-5, in a different hand from the rest), the second ff. 124-196, the third 197- 233. The first has initials in red, with a few decorative initials in red and green (ff. 1, 3 b, 62 b, 84, 102 b ; in the second the initials are in red, blue and green, and in the third in red and blue. On f. iiib is a list of contents (xvii cent.) The following names occur: f. 181, Jaspar Kestelt, Gabriel Cassel (xv cent.); f. 182, Dan Philippe Laguilier (xv cent.), following the couplet, "Boun (?) exemple met en luy Qui se castie par autruy" (a slightly different form of this proverb is quoted in Godefroy, Dict. de I'anc. Langue francaise, ii, p. 87) ; the name Jhos Belet on f. I presumably refers to art. 2. The volume at one time belonged to Tongerloo Abbey (see f. ii), and bears the press-mark Q. MS. i (ff. i, iii b). lt was afterwards in the library of Sir Thomas Phillipps (MS. 4173; sale-cat. 1896, lot 80), whose crest is stamped on f. ii. Bought at Sotheby's, 17 Mar. 1911 (lot 607).
