COLLECTION of original papers and letters of Sir Julius Cæsar, Master of the Rolls, relating chiefly to Chancery cases submitted to him for his opinion or adjudication; 1582-1619. MSS. 4190, 5664, 6038, 9045, 10038, 10113, 11405, 11406, 11574, 12495-12507, 14027, 14313, 15208, 15235, 34324, 36111, 36112, 36767, 36969, 36970. The present volume is vol. 36 of Cæsar's MSS. (see Lansdowne MS. 124, f. 79 b) and lot 62 of the Cæsar sale in 1757. Cæsar's own list of contents is at ff. 1, 2, but the articles have been re-arranged. The principal contents are : 1. "Christian Meditations vppon eight psalmes [1, 6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 132, 143] of the prophete Dauid. Made and newely publisshed by Theodore de Besze and Englisshed by J. D." (altered from " J. C."), dedicated by the translator [Julius Dalmarius al. Cæsar] to Mistres Dorcas Martin" (altered to "Elizabeth Jobson," and then altered back again), 17 June, 1582. (Dorcas, dau. of Sir R. Martin, and widow of R. Lusher, was married to Sir Julius Cæsar in 1582). At the end is the certificate of Robert Crowleye, [Prebendary of St. Paul's], that he has examined the "meditations" and found nothing "yt maye not be published to the edification of Christians." A translation of the same selection of Beza's psalms by I.S.S., printed in 1582 and dedicated to Anne, wife of Sir Nicholas Bacon, seems to be an entirely independent work. f. 4.
