LETTER-BOOK contaning,, drafts of letters, official and private, of Thomas Read [Reid, Ithaedus], Latin Secretary to James I, covering the period 1619-1623 ; with a few common-places. Autograph, except for f. 109. The official correspondence, which forms the bulk of the volume, comprises drafts, chiefly in Latin, of letters from James I to foreign sovereigns, etc., dealing, among other matters, with the sending of English levies to Poland; the Palatinate War and the special embassy of Sir Edward Conway and Sir Richard Weston; and the journey of Charles and Buckingham to Madrid. The recipients' names are given in the Index. There are also drafts of safe-conducts, etc., e.g. for Aletheia, Countess of Arundel (1620, 1622), ff. 15 b, 66 b. Fair copies or translations of many of the letters here drafted occur in other MSS. : e.g. Add. MS. 35832, ff. 10, 17 (copies in Read's autograph of the drafts on ff. 15, 10 b), 22 (transl. of the draft on f. 12, the names of Conway and Weston being substituted for that of Sir Henry Wotton); other copies in 36445, etc. The private letters, mainly in English, some of which are amusing, are addressed to Read's brothers, sister-in-law, and various friends, ff. 4 b, 24, 41 b-44, etc. (the names are given in the Index). The commonplaces include medical recipes, ff. 13, 46 b ; memoranda relating to the Netherlands, Spinola's plans, etc. [1620], f. 22 ; drafts of Latin poems, etc., ff. 35 b-36, 77, 77 b, 108. F. 109 is in the hand of Georg, Rudolph Weckherlin, Latin Secretary to Charles I, and relates to the Merchant Adventurers at Hamburg and the disputes between Charles I and Parliament.
