MISCELLANEOUS volume, largely in the band of John Streech, canon of the Augustinian Priory of Kenilworth (cf. Add. MS. 35295, which was written about 1422). Lat. Contents are: 1. Verses against the Austin Friars for representing Augustine in their garb their founder in opposition to the claims of the Austin Canons: (a) Beg. "Augustine pater es verus semper amicus." f. 5; (b) "Super capud Augustini," beg. "Augustine pater numquam fueris heremita." It includes a list of minor varieties of the Heremite order. f. 5 b; (c) Similar verses are on f. 14, and on ff. 14 b, 156 b-162 b, of a more general kind. On f. 5 one Brangwyn is mentioned as apologist of the Austin Canons. On f. 84 b is the hymn beg. "Sacerdotes mementote" (Chevalier, Repert. Hymnolog. no. 33012).
2. "Cronica cuiusdam amici veritatis in argumentum functacionis Canonicorum Regularium ordinis Sci. Augustini," with introduction beg. "Frater quidam ordinis diceneium se heremitas Sci. Augustini," a counterblast against the work of some Austin Friar claiming priority for his order as (e.g.) in Harley MS. 2386, f. 62. f. 6.
3. "Nomina prioratuum Canonicorum nigrorum" in England and Wales, beg . with the diocese of Lincoln. f. 15.
4. Chronicle of general chapters of Augustinian Canons held at Northhampton, Huntingdon, etc., 1325-1350. f. 19. Another and fuller copy is in Cotton MS. Vespasian D. I, ff. 41b-70 b.
5. Treatise on the (30) different "colours" or kinds of rhyming verse, with examples. Beg. "Versus a quibusdam describitur." f. 33. Other metrical examples are on ff. 55 b-56 b.
6. "Liber Catonis," moral distichs in hexameter verse attributed to Dionysius Cato, see F. Hauthal, Catonis Philosophi Liber, Berlin, 1869. f. 35 b.
7. "Esopus in Fabulis" in Latin elegiacs, the collection, known as Anonymus Neveleti," of sixty Aesopic fables and two tales, with prologue beg. "Ut iuvet et prosit." f. 41. The series agrees with that of Add. MS. 18107 (see Ward, Catalogue of Romances, ii, p. 309) except that art. 60 ends with the additional couplet, "Fine fruor versu gemino quod cogitet omnis Fabula declarat datque quod intus habet." Printed in Hervieux, Fabulistes Latim, vol. ii (1884), p. 385.
8. "Ymago Mundi," in three books down to the beginning of the " Quinta etas:" printed in Migne, Patrolog. Lat. clxxii, col. 119 as by Honorius Augustodunensis, but attiibuted also to Henry of Huntingdon (cf. Cotton MS. Vesp. E. x, f. 86). f. 57. Followed by a 4th book (f. 80) "de vaticiniis Sibille," beg. "Sibilline generaliter omnes" (cf. Vesp. B. xxv, f. 117 b and Vesp. E. iv, f. 143); printed, with a different ending, in Migne, xc, col. 1182 among the spurious works of Bede. In a hand of l2th-13th cent.
9. "Speculum Stultorum," by Nigel, also called Wireker, a monk of Christ Church, Canterbury, with introductory letter to William [Longchamp, bishop of Ely, 1189].and marginal illustrations. The text differs occasionally from that published by T. Wright, Anglo- Latin Satir. Poets, vol. i (Rolls Series), notably in ff. 127 b-130 b, beg. with "De ordine mendicancium," which are omitted in Wright, p. 95. f. 85.
10. "Fecit Moyses (etc.) : Inter cetera opera"; (g) Advent Sun. beg. "Dominus prope (etc.) : Inter multa"; (h) 2nd Sun. in Adv. beg. "Scientes quod hora (etc.): Cum omne tempus." In a hand of the l2th-13th cent. f. 169. Vellum; ff. 186. 73/4 in. x 53/8 in. Earl xv cent., except artt. 8 and 10, XII-XIII cent., which belong to different volumes. The flyleaves (13th cent.) are from: (a) A scholastic treatise on syntax. f. 2 ; (b) Extracta from Decretals, chiefly bk. v. ff. 4 185. Of the rest of the volulne artt. 1 (mostly), 2, 5-7, are in the band of Johannes Strecch (see above), as also the note of books lent to various people (dominus Joh. Susex, dom. Petrus de Preston, Will. Clerke de Okam), f. 168 b. On f. 55 is the colophon "Involvens pannis puerum miserere Iohannis. Strecch," and on f. 186 are the names M. Morgan and Robt. Walker de Belton, 16th cent. Contemporary binding of kid over oak boards. Belonged to the Cope family of Bramshill (cf . Hist. MSS. Comm. 3rd Rep. App. p. 242 sale-cat. of Sir Anthony Cope, Bart., 4 Mar. 1913, lot 58).
