"GESTA ROMANORUM PONTIFICUM, memoria digna, que in cronicis communibus non habentur, a Leone IX, anno 1050 [sic], usque ad Nicolaum Vm." Contents: 1. Lives of the Popes from Leo IX [enthroned Feb. 1049] to Alexander III, omitting Victor II, Benedict X, Victor III and Urban II. With a colophon (f. 152), "Expliciunt Hugonis Imolensis gesta a Pontificatu Leonis IX, qui cepit anno Domini 1050, usque ad annum prope xxm Pontificatus Alexandri Pape 3ii, 1180; qui Hugo tunc temporis Prothonotariatus Apostolice Sedis officium gerebat." Extracts from these lives are quoted by Baronius ; cf. Annales Ecclesiastici, tom. xvii, p. 112, with MS. f. 5, p. 355 with MS. f. 13, etc. They were known to him as a collection made by Niccolo Roselli, Cardinal of Aragon (d. 1362), a MS. of which he found in the Vatican Library. The lives are printed in Muratori, Rerum Italicarum Scriptores, tom. iii, pt. i, pp. 277-475 passim, from a MS. in the Este Library, after collation with two other MSS. in Milan (see Prolegomena, ib. p. 274). In the present MS. however there is a passage, ff. 18-19 b "In Calcedonensi . . . . prosequamur," which is lacking in Muratori, p. 307, while on the other band there is a lacuna at f. 94 (after habeatur, 1. 13) as compared with Muratori, p. 454. The colophon does not occur in the other MSS., and the author named in it, Hugo Imolensis, does not seem to be known otherwise. f. 2.
2. "De Gregorio Papa nono qui cepit regnare anno Mccxxii [sic] in vigilia sancti Benedicti, et sedit fere 15 annos" : life of Gregory IX [1227-1241] also printed by Muratori, op. cit. pp. 575-587, from the Este MS. of Roselli's collection, which, like the present MS., omits the Popes who come between Alexander III and Gregory IX. There are however considerable divergencies between the two texts. There are also lacunas on MS. f. 153, after ordinatur, 1. 6 (Muratori, p. 575), on MS. f. 172 b, after applicuit, 1. 10 (Muratori, p. 583, col. ii, 1. 27 the MS. resumes at p. 586, col. i, 1. 15) and at the end, MS. f. 174 b, after creauerunt (Muratori, p. 586). Colophon, f. 174 b, "Ex Biblioteca Ricardi Salzburgensis Protonotarii Apostolici." f. 152 b.
3. Jannotti Manetti Florentini, De vita ac moribus Nicolai V [1447- 1455]. In three books with a preface. Printed by Muratori, op. cit. tom. iii, pt. ii, cols. 907-960, from a Florence MS. f. 180 b-185, "Hecuba Priami . . . diuinitusque prosequitur," are omitted by Muratori as a "farrago de veterum somniis, si non insulsa, inanis saltem, et loco inopportuna" (footnote, op. cit. col. 911). f. 175 b. Paper; ff. ii + 260. Folio. xvii cent., in an Italian hand. Belonged to Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, and is entered in the Catalocue of his MSS. (Add. MS. 8220, f. 13) as being No. 427 (cf. no. on cover) in the Mattei Catalogue. It is not among the 212 Guilford MSS. "ex Bibliotheca Mattei" of which Sir Thomas Phillipps printed a list, Brit. Mus. press-mark, Tab. 436 b.
12 (5). Guilford sale-cat., 8 Dec. 1830, part of lot 91, purchased by the bookseller Thomas Thorpe. Lot 125 in Puttick and Simpson's sale-cat., 27 Mar. 1913.
