MISCELLANEOUS MSS. and printed papers in 15 different languages, copied or collected by George Borrow (1803-1881) ; from the Borrow Collection of Mr. Clement Shorter, who purchased them from the executors of Mrs. Henrietta MacOubrey, the author's stepdaughter. For other philological MSS. by Borrow see Add. MSS. 34183, 34201. The documents have been arranged in alphabetical order according to their languages, as follows: 1. Armenian. Fifteen lines of rhyming verse. In Borrow's hand.
2. Chinese. Translation of the Gospel of St. John, ch. i; with another copy of the same on the verso. The type is not calligraphical. Printed by [Richard] Watts, Crown Court, Temple Bar, whose name occurs as early (in Kent's Directory) as 1817 and as late (in the London Directory) as 1844. f. 2.
3. Danish. (a) A new ballad about the peasant Jeppe, how by diligence and industry he became a well-to-do man. Stanzas 3-14 are missing; (b) The merry Jesper's ballad, teaching how one can be cheerful and content in poverty; (c) A new ballad about the sea-fight at Kioge Bay, 24, 25 Sept. 1788. All are printed, (a) and (b) at Copenhagen. f. 3.
4. Galician. "Decimas Gallegas ampliando la Letrilla de los Labradores á los Regios Desposorios de S. M. [possibly the 4th marriage of Ferdinand VII (see f. 14) in 1829] por el mismo Autor." f. 13.
5. Greek (Modern). Tale describing how Catoprocucubagiates stole a horse for the Duke of Brunswick from Ephemerius, its owner. Unfinished. f. 19.
6. Hebrew (square writing). "Epicedium composed on Rabbi Mosche Basula by his scholar Rabbi Jehuda Arje" [1571-1648]. Note, and presumably the text, in Borrow's hand. Very inaccurately copied. f. 20.
7. Hungarian. Part (pp. 33-64) of a book dealing with Italy or Italian Art. Printed. f. 21.
8. Irish. Fragment of the modern version of the tale of the Tragic Death of the sons of Visneach. Two copies, inaccurately written. Printed by the Society for the Preservation of the Irish Language, Dublin, 1898. f. 37.
9. Latin. (a) Copy of lines printed by C. Babington, Polychronicon Ranulphi Higden, Rolls Series, i, pp. 400-412. In Borrow's hand; (b) "Liber narrans quod evenit inter Ton Goungum et spiritum foci" : fable, temp. Giya-Tching [Kia-Tsing], Emperor of China of the Ming dynasty (d. 1567). Inaccurately copied, with many corrections and occasional interlineations in Russian. In Borrow's hand; (c) Charm "contra lumbricos." Printed. Two copies. f. 43.
10. Maltese. "Alfabett Malti," for Italian learners. Printed. f. 53.
11. Manchu. Apparently a corrected exercise. Written by a European, presumably Borrow. f. 56.
12. Portuguese. Part (pp. 11-14) of a romance the hero of which is one Reinaldos. Printed. f. 57.
13. Russian. Part (pp. XXXIX-XLI) Of the introduction to N. Gnyedich, , St. Petersburg, 1825. Printed. f. 59.
14. Spanish. (a) Part of a romance, the hero of which is one Panfilo. In Borrow's hand; (b) Part (pp. 3-6) of a play, some of the characters of which speak in dialect. Printed; (c) Two extracts apparently in the Spanish-Gipsy language, the latter of which is in Borrow's band and would seem to be a poem; (d) Five documents in Hebrew cursive script, but in some romance language, probably Spanish. Probably written in Turkey. Some are signed "Hayyim Ibn 'Attar" and the last and longest is dated 1839. f. 61.
15. Turkish. Part of a romance. Unfinished. f. 102. Paper ; ff. 108. Folio. XIX cent. Presented by C. K. Shorter, Esq.
