JOHN LOCKE, "Some Directions concerning ye Education of his son, sent to his worthy Freind Mr. Edward Clarke of Chipley, 1684": autograph MS. of the tract afterwards published in a somewhat expanded form (1693) as Some Thoughts concerning Education. It was written during the period of Locke's exile in Holland, and its composition was interrupted by the circumstance of his moving from place to place during his "ramble this sommer about these provinces [i.e. the United Provinces]," as he says, in a letter which accompanies the work, on f. 51b. Another letter of Locke to Clarke, who was M.P. for, Taunton and Comptroller of the Household to Queen Mary II, is in Add. MS. 32096, f. 1. Paper ; fi: 52. 41/4 in. x 31/4 in. A.D. 1684. Belonged, in 1913, to Col. E. C. A. Sanford, C.M.G., a descendant of Edward Clarke (Sotheby's sale-cat, 28 July, 1913, lot 195).
