A COLLECTION of solos for the viola da gamba transcribed into modern staff notation from the original (17th cent.) tablature of a MS. belonging to the Corporation of Manchester, under the supervision of Dr. Thomas Lea Southgate, who has written a preface, with notes on the composers. Those named are Anthonye (probably Mark Anthony Gayerdell, fi. 1558-1564), John and Thomas Bates, Thomas Birche, Dr. Charles Coleman, -Crosbey,- Elliot of Oxford, John Este, Huh Facie, Alphonso Ferrabosco (II?), Gervise Gerrarde, Stephen Goodall, Thomas and William Gregorie, George Hudson, Simon Ives (father and son), John Jenkins, William Kingelake, John Laurence, William Lawes (under various aliases), [John?] Lillie, Thomas Maxtime (Martine?), Henry Read, John Read, Roger Read (? an alias for W. Lawes), Thomas Read, Joseph Sherlie or Sheirlye, Christopher Simpson, Richard Sumarte (who appears to have had a large share in the compilation of the MS., or the arrangement of the music), Peter Warner, G Willis, John Withie, [Clement ?] Wooddicocke, Thomas Woodington, Thomas Woodson, and William Young. At the beginning of the MS. (f. 20 b) are some "Graces on the violl," and (f. 21) "Severall [22] setts or tunings of the Violl [da gamba], as are contained in this booke," the instructions given in locis for tuning that instrument being headed variously as "violl waye" (f. 34 b), "lyra ways" (f. 36), "Alfonso [Ferrabosco] waye" (ff. 40, 50), "sette of eights" (f. 52), "Lancashire pipes" (f. 58 b), "Bagpipes" (f. 60), "Horne pipe" (f. 60), "French sette" (f. 60 b), "Harpe sette flat" (f. 64), and "Harpe sette sharpe" (f. 71 b). At the end (ff. 98-110) are arrangements of a few of the precedina compositions, as string quintets, songs, etc., by Dr. Southgate and Sir Frederick Bridge. Among the tunes named are: "Queene Maries Dumpe" and "What if a daye." f. 26 ; "Fortune [my foe]." f. 26 b; "[My] Roben is to the greense woode gon," and "Whoope, doe me no harme." f. 27; "Daphne." f. 27b; "Salte pitts." f. 28; "Lachryme," and "The Buildings." f. 29; "Solus cum sola." f. 29 b; "The Nightingale." f. 30; "Malte man." f. 34 b; "The Kings maske." f. 35 b; "Bowe bells." f. 36 ; "The Princes Coranto." f.41; "Jemmye" (possibly name of composer). f.41b; "Lancashire pipes." f. 58 b; "Kate of Bardie" and "Pigges of Rumsey." f. 59 b; "None-such." f. 61 b; "Modicum bonum" (?). f. 62 b; "Countesse of Exeters Almaine." f. 69 b ; "La cloche." f. 74 ; "Gillie-flower." f. 76. The other pieces are most of them preludia, or dance-tunes, especially courantes, allemandes, pavans, and sarabands with an occasional "thumpe" (or dump), "maske" (i.e. masque-tune), galliard, "chicona" (chaconne), ground, fancy, "toye," or "point" (i.e. prelude).
