ORDINAL of Cistercian use, from the abbey of St. Mary at Eberbach, al. Erbach, in the diocese of Mainz. The contents are: (1) Directions for celebrating Mass and reciting the Office: (a) de tempore, beginning with Advent, cap. i. f. 1 b ; (b) "de sanctis [circa] quorum festa . . . . aliqua dubietas poterit euenire," from St. Antony to St. Thomas Apostle, cap. cxviii. f. 34 b; (c) regulations for offices of the dead, cap. cxcviii. f. 49; (d) lists of feasts lacking vespers, of sermon-days, etc., cap. cciv. f. 51 b; (2) Table of chapters, not tallying exactly with the marginal indications, which give ccxxii chapters to ccxix of the table. f. 55 ; (3) Rule of St. Benedict. f. 59. After cap. lii, "de oratorio monasterii", is inserted (f. 71 b) a résumé of cap. cv of the ordinal, "de dominicalibus officiis ab octaua pentecostes usque ad aduentum." Later hands have assigned St. Bernards name to the Mass of the 3rd feria after the octave of Easter (f. 23 b) and inserted it among the saints on whose vigils the great bell was rung (f. 54). Vellum; ff. ii + 77. 61/8 in. x 5 in. Beg. of XIV cent. Initials in blue and red. Notes of ownership, etc., are: "Notum sit omnibus hominibus quod fr. Conradus Waldoff erat medius sacrista anno domini [m]cccco lxo in die S.
