MISCELLANE0US treatises and notes on scholastic philosophy, as follows:-
1. A treatise, with marginal commentary, on psychology. Becr. imperfectly "Tercia potencia est formatiua" ; ends "secundum essenciam est in omni parte corporis. Sequitur Recolligo igitur quod dictum est, etc." The complete treatise, but with considerable differences, is found in Royal MS. 8 A. xviii, ff. 49-56 b, where it is called "Tractatus de anima et eius potenciis" and beg. "Sicut dicit Damascenus, impossible est." lt is placed by P. de Loë, "De Vita et Scriptis B. Alberti Magni" in Anal. Bolland. xxi, p. 369, among the spurious and doubtful works, and works contained in other treatises, of Albertus Magnus, and is founded on his Philosophia Pauperum, v. 2 sqq. (Opera, Parisiis, 1890-1899, tom. v, p. 508 sqq.), with which it is in many places, especially in the earlier portion, identical ; but elsewhere it shows wide diveragencies. f. 1.
2. "De diffinicione et diuisione philosophie" : a commentary on some other treatise. Beg. "Anima est principium et causa mouendi . . . Iste est libellus ad philosophiam introductorius" ; ends "videri apud Scotum et beatum Thomam in libros sentenciarum." Colophon : "Foeliciter in finem deductus liber hic anno 1504 die Mercurii post nativitatem intemerate virginis matris saluatoris nostri [Sept. 8], qui cum eadem benedictus in secula seculorum. Amen." f. 4.
3. "Thomas de ente et essencia" : the commentary by Gerardus de Monte on the treatise so named of St. Thomas Aquinas. Printed in Expositiones textuales dubiorum atque . . . explanationes in libros . . . Arestotelis, etc., Colonie, 1497, but the present MS. can hardly have been copied from the printed text. Beg. "Insignis peripotetice sc. peripatetice] veritatis interpres" ; ends "ipsa lux non eclipsabilis sed lucens eternaliter. Amen."
4. A table showing the division of philosophy into its various branches. f. 86.
5. Notes on the nature of philosophic knowledge. Beg. "Sciendum philosaphus est homo diuinarum humanarumque rerum" ; ends "de anima." f. 86b.
6. Miscellaneous philosophical notes. ff. 87, 87 b.
7. Averroes, De substantia orbis; without title or author's name. This translation, made by one of the Toledo school of translators, is contained in Royal MS. 12 C. xv, ff. 251 b-254, but there lacks the last two and a half chapters. Printed in the Junta edition of the works of Aristotle, Venice, 1552, 1550, vol. ix, pp. 3-6. In the present MS. the earlier part is furnished with a marginal commentary. For list of other MSS. see J. Wood Brown, Michael Scot (Edinburgh, 1897), pp. 123, 126, to which add Magd. Coll. Oxford MS. 112, f. 241. Beg. "[I]n hoc tractatu intendimus perscrutari de rebus"; ends "Et sciendum quia hec questio est valde bona." f . 88.
8. Oration, without title or author's name, addressed apparently to a public body, probably the senate, of Breslau by a person appointed by it "palestre rei literaria certaminis . . . rectorem," on taking up the post. Reference is made to a "doctor egregius Schwofhaym ad quem tocius rei literarie cura[m] refertis." This is probably Hieronymus Schwoffheim, who died 4 Apr. 1516 as scholasticus and cantor of Breslau cathedral, see Zeitschr. d. Vereins für Gesch. u. Alt. Schlesiens, xi, p. 308, note 4, xvii, p. 220. The present speech may have some reference to the abortive proposal to establish a University at Breslau in 1505, for which see F. G. A. Weiss, Chronik d. Stadt Breslau (Breslau, 1888), p. 757 sqq. Beg. "Solebant Romani illi prisci"; ends "fidem amorem the obseruanciam dixi." f. 111.
9. Notes on the De partibus philosophie essencialibus, the De differentia rethorice ethice et pollitice, and the De gradibus formarum accidentalium of Egidius Romanus (Egidio Colonna). The first does not appear, at least under this title, in lists of his works ; for the other two see Joseph Pamphilus, Chron. 0rd. Fratrum Eremitarum S. Aug. (Rome, 1581), fol. 43. f. 113.
10. "Proposiciones de esse et essencia clarissimi doctoris Egidii de Roma": the Theoremata de esse et essentia of Egidio Colonna. The propositions are as in the printed texts; the commentary consists of notes and extracts from that seen in C. Kacheloffen's edition [Leipzig] of 1493. Beg. "Omne esse vel est purum per se" ; ends "et creatorem substancie et accidentis benedictum in secula." Colophon : "Finitur vigili studio 5 kal. Octobris 1507 salutis anno." f. 115. Paper; ff. i + 120. Quarto. 91/4 in. x 7 in. Beginning of XVI cent. ; written in Germany, perhaps at Breslau (see art. 8). Transferred from the Department of Printed Books.
