LETTERS of George Canning to John Hookham Frere, 20 June, 1800-31 Aug. 1826. The most important and interesting (extracts from which are printed in G. Festing's J. H. Frere and his Friends, 1899, pp. 27-63, 252-273) are those of 1801-1804, during the Addington ministry, when Canning was in opposition and Frere minister at Lisbon and subsequently at Madrid. Included are some of Canning's best-known political verses : "To doubt is to decide," f. 94 ; "The Pilot that weathered the storm," f. 114; "The Bird of Today," f. 131 ; along with two satirical letters, signed Septimius, on the Peace of Amiens, and addressed to "The Editor of the Republic of the Seven Islands" (1802), f. 84. On the back of some of the letters are rough drafts of verses, some from Frere's translation of "The Frogs" of Aristophanes, fr. 189 b, 280 b, 283, 284 b. Paper; ff. 371. Folio.
