THREE LETTERS from Ensign James Butler to his elder brother William, father of Dr. Samuel Butler, Bishop of Lichfield. The letters are in journal form, written mostly on the voyage to India, and dated 4 Mar. 1764, 4 Apr. 1764, and 21 Jan. 1765 (the journal ending with his arrival at Calcutta, 23 Sept. 1764). Copies, the latter part (from f. 17) in the same hand as the duplicate copies of the second and third letters contained in Add. MS. 34583 (ff. 3, 11), in which there is added a fourth letter (f. 33). An introductory note on f. 2 by Samuel Butler, author of Erewhon, describes the letters as copied "I presume by my great great aunt Deborah or her sisters," but a fuller account of the different copies is given in a memorandum by Mr. Festing Jones on ff. 74-76.
