AUTOGRAPH LETTERS from the Alfred Morrison collection. Vol. III. (From the second portion, sold at Sotheby's, 15-19 Apr. 1918.) As in the case of the preceding volumes, Add. MSS. 39672, 39673, most of the letters are fully described in the folio catalogue of the collection, 1883-1892, or in the octavo supplement (A-D) 1893-1896. See also below, 39779-39793, 39839-39842. The contents are :-
1. Letters of Count Camillo Benso di Cavour, the Italian statesman:-
-(a) To Mélanie Waldor, French woman of letters, on the political situation in Italy after the defeat of Novara, [1849]. The envelope is stamped Turin, 26 Apr. Printed by F. Ruffini in Camillo di Cavour e Mélanie Waldor, 1914, p. 158. The recipient is wrongly given as Countess Anastasie di Circourt in vol. i, p. 146, of L. Chiala, Lettere edite ed inedite di Camillo Cavour (1883-1887, 6 vols.), and also in the catalogue of the Morrison Collection (2nd Ser., ii, p. 128). f. 3 ;-
-(b) To -, declaring his ignorance of the reasons for the transference of Mr. Cordier to Nice and complaining of the violence of the ultra-Conservatives at Chambéry, [185-]. f. 6. These two letters formed no. 265 of the Alfred Bovet collection. Facs. of f. 3 in Catalogue, 1884;-

The mention of the Countess Brandeis as governess points to Maria Carolina or Marie Antoinette as the recipient. Cf. a similar letter to another daughter, Maria Christina, 1754, in A. von Anneth, Briefe der Kaiserin Maria Theresia an ihre Kinder und Freunde, 1881, ii, p. 353.
