PAPERS of Samuel Pepys, 1685/6-1695, and Larcum Kendall, 1765-1796, viz:-
1. Statements, dated 1688, Dec. 1689, 22 Aug. 1695, by Pepys in his cypher, concerning the birth of [James Francis Edward] Prince of Wales [the Old Pretender], on 10 June 1688, chiefly copied from Margaret Dawson's MS., now Add.MS.26657 , before the loss of some of its leaves and the original binding as described on ff.10, 20. The book was in Pepys's hands from 22-29 Aug. 1695. Cf. also Add. MS. 33286 and Depositions Taken the 22d of October 1688 . . . . Relating to the Birth of the (Then) Prince of Wales, [Edinburgh ? 1688 ?]. Ff. 4-8, 15-23 contain a typewritten decypherment by Prof. Hugh Longbourne Callendar. Add. MS. 26657, ff. 5-14 (the narrative), and 2-4 (biographical notes on the children of James II), correspond with ff. 2-3, and 10 b, l. 10-end respectively (f. 10, l. 8-10 b, l. 9 contains additional notes on James's children, probably copied from the now missing leaves in Add. MS. 26657). The rest of the cypher (ff. 9-10, l. 7, 11-14) comprises " Notes taken from Mistress Dawson . . . at a visit by me this day " (22 Aug. 1695), and memoranda of questions to be asked by Pepys at a future visit, etc. Holograph. ff. 1-23.
2. " A Memoriall and Proposition from the Secretary of yeAdmiralty touching ye Navy. To the King [James II. January 26th 168 5/6." The memorial, presented 29 Jan. 1685/6. contains a review of naval conditions at three periods (1679, May 1685 [sc. 1684], 31 Dec. 1685), followed by Pepys's " Proposition " for the restoration of the navy, and a discussion as to the persons best fitted for its execution. Only a few proper names and one signature are in Pepys's autograph. An account of the events leading up to the memorial, and a detailed description of another copy (Pepysian MS. 1490, p. 81, at Magdalene College, Cambridge), are in J. R. Tanner's Cat. of Naval MSS. in the Pepysian Lib., i (Navy Record Soc., XXVI), pp. 65-75. Another version of the " Proposition," in the form in which it was transcribed for Sir Anthony Deane and his colleagues, is in the Pepysian MS., p. 219. The " Memoriall " was used by Pepys for his Memoires rel. to the State of the Royal Navy, 1690, pp. 1-47 passim, the revised form of the " Proposition " being employed. f. 24.
3. Correspondence and papers (mainly autograph) of Larcum Kendall, watchmaker, of Furnival's Inn Court, London; 6 June 1765- 12 Apr. 1796. Kendall was entrusted by the Board of Longitude with the construction and improvement of the chronometer invented by John Harrison (1693-1776) for determining the longitude at sea. At f. 50 b is a reference to a chronometer supplied to Captain Cook. For particulars of Kendall's family, 1686-1766, see Add. Ch. 62374- 62384. ff. 33-87. Paper; ff. 87. Folio. XVII and XVIII centt.
