A large number of the deeds relate to the manor and barony of Manchester, co. Lanc., and some at least of the originals are now in the possession of the Corporation of Manchester, having been acquired, circ. 1845, with the manorial rights, from Sir Oswald Mosley, 2nd Bart., into whose family the manor had passed by purchase in 1596 (see Brit. Archaeolog. Assoc. Journ., New Ser. i, pp. 49-57 ; J. Harland, Mamecestre, Chetham Soc., 3 Vols.. 1861-2). Amongst the remaining transcripts are :- a mandate (11 Dec.

Occasionally (e.g. ff. 17 b, 50, 52 b) a deed cannot be identified by its symbol and in three cases (ff. 12, 58) no symbols or other indications of ownership are given. Paper; ff. 85. Large folio. Lat. and Fr. There has been an excision on f. 21, and ff. 36-49, 59-69, 72-74 are entirely blank. Modern binding of Russian leather, tooled. stamped with the arms of Dering in six quarterings [Sir Edward Dering before his creation as Baronet, in 1627 ?] and the verse " Avrato clypeo salteria nigra Deringi est." The majority of Starkey's antiquarian

MS. 38537. Dering sale (Puttick and Simpson, 12 June 1858), lot 1661. Phillips MS. 14922 (sale-cat., 27 June 1919, lot 892).
