LOG-BOOK of H.M.S. Victory from 19 September 1805 to 15 January 1806, kept by Thomas Atkinson, sailing-master. The original MS. from which the fair copy deposited at the Admiralty and now in the museum of the Public Record Office was made (see Catalogue of Manuscripts . . . . in the Museum of the Public Record Office, 12th Ed., 1926, p. 28, Case I, no. 106 ; extracts from this fair copy are printed in Logs of the Great Sea Fights, Vol. ii, Navy Records Soc., 1900, p. 183). The Battle of Trafalgar is described under dates 21 and 22 Oct., ff. 33 b-36 b ; the signals exchanged between the Victory and the Fleet, apparently not entered in the fair copy, are printed from ff. 33-35 of this MS. in Report of a Committee Appointed by the Admiralty to Examine Consider the Evidence Relating to the Tactics employed by Nelson at the Battle of Trafalger 1913 (Blue-Book Cd. 7120), pp. 62-63. Paper ; ff. 79. Quarto. Bound in a sail-cloth wrapper, lettered " His Majesty's Ship Victory's Log Book No. 10, 1805." On ff. 37-40 are biographical notes of Thomas Atkinson, extracted from the Hampshire Telegraph of June 1836. The signature of his daughter, Mrs. Alice Mary Carey, 4 Aug. 1851, occurs as owner on f. 1, from whom the MS. descended to her son and grandson, and was sold on the latter's behalf by Messrs. Sotheby in 1911 to the late Mr. T. J. Barratt, apparently by private treaty. Sotheby's sale-cat., 30 June 1919. Presented by James Buchanan, Esq., afterwards 1st Baron Woolavington.
