"' TRUTH CLEARED FROM SCANDALLS": an anonymous and apparently unpublished tract recording the discussions of Richard Farnworth (d. 1666), a leading Quaker minister, with representatives of other religious bodies in 1653 (cf. ff. 15 b, 22, and Braithwaite, Beginnings of Quakerism pp. 127, 128), viz., with:-
(a) Joseph Wright and other Baptists in the Isle of Axholme, co. Linc., at [Great] Horton, co. York, and North Lewerton [Leverton], co. Nott. ;-
(b) John Cromwell [? Rector of Clayworth 1657-1662, cf. Alumni Cantabrig., ser. i, i (1922), p. 423] and John Firth [apparently Vicar of Mansfield, cf. ibid., ser. i, ii, p. 140], " preists," at Torworth and Mansfield, co. Nott. ;-
(c) the Independents at Chesterfield, co. Derb., etc. This tract is not identical with a work of somewhat similar title published by Farnworth in 1654 (cf. Joseph Smith, Cat. of Friends' Books,' (1867)., pp. 586, 587). The author, who subscribes himself " A Freind of ye Truth," states (ff. 13 b, 14, 25 b) that he was a companion of Farnworth and an eye-witness of what he relates. Paper; ff. 37. A.D. 1653. Small quarto. On f. 1 is the inscription (17th cent.) " Richarde Farnesworths booke." The modern morocco binding is stamped ." Swarthmore Manuscript " (for accounts of this collection see Braithwaite, op. cit., pp. 538-541, and Penney, Journal of Geo. Fox, i, pp. xxxi, xxxii). Belonged subsequently
to Sir James Whitehead, 1st Bart. (Hodgson's sale-cat., 17 July 1919, lot 555).
