SACRAMENTARY, executed for the monastery of S. Isidore at Leon, Spain, as appears from the "Dedicatio S. Isidori (March 6 and octave, see Manuel Risco, Historia de La Ciudad y Corte de Leon, Madrid, 1792, i, p. 54) in red in the Calendar, and from the additions in black of S. Martin (Jan. 12) [Augustinian Canon of Leon, d. 1203 ; in Acta Sanctorum, 11 Feb. 1221, but see Risco, op. cit., i, p. 64] and "Dedicacio ecclesie sancte Trinitatis" (Nov. 25), see Risco, op. cit., ii (Iglesia de Leon), p. 147. Contents:-
1. Calendar, in red and black. Red entries, in addition to those noted above, include . " Yldefonsi ep." [of Toledo] (Jan. 23) ; " Leandri ep. et conf." [of Seville] (Mar. 14) ; " Ysidori ep. et conf." (Apr. 5 and
octave) ; "Pelagii mart." (June 26) ; " Transl. S. Froylani ep. et conf." [of Leon; translated to Leon before 1142 : apparently a contemporary insertion] (Aug. 11);" Antonini mart.” (Sept. 2) " Froilani ep. et conf." (Oct. 3) ; "Seruandi et Germani mart." (Oct. 23); "Vincencii, Sauine et Christete " (Oct. 26, the first-named with octave); " Claudi, Luperci et Victorici " (Oct. 30); " Rufi ep. et conf." [of Avignon] (Nov. 14, as at Valentia ; usually Nov. 12); " Facundi et Primitiui " (Nov. 27) ; " Eulalie uirg." (Dec. 10); " Commemoratio S. Marie " (Dec. 18) ; " Translatio S. Ysidori in Legione " (Dec. ; ") Thome archiep. et mart." (Dec. 29, d. 1170, canonised 1; "Translatio S. Iacobi in Yspania" (Dec. 30). There are also a series of unusual entries, e.g. "Immolatio agni " (Mar. 15), " Rupti sunt fontes abissi " (Apr. 12), etc. Black entries include " Eulalie uirg. Barchinonensis " (Feb. 12), " Pauli Narbonensis ep." (Mar. 22), and a number of Spanish and southern French saints. Among the later additions, besides the two already mentioned, are " Translacio SS. Claudi, Luperci, et Victorici" (Apr. 22), and some that are difficult to explain, e.g. " Vincenci conf. de la grata " (Mar. 7) [Vincent, Bp. of Cracow, d. 8 Mar. 1218 or 1223?]. A still later hand has erased the original black entry, "Christofori et Cucufatis mart." on July 25, and re-written it in red on July 26 (cf. Acta Sanctorum, tom. 33, p. 150 D). There is no octave to the Nativity of the Virgin, and All Souls and the Conception of the Virgin are later additions. f. 1.
2. Table showing, besides the monthly solar and lunar regulars and the concurrents, the epacts, claves terminorum and annual lunar regulars for the nineteen years' cycle, with the usual mnemonic " None aprilis norunt quinos " etc. (Migne, Patr. 3. "Oratio sancti Augustini [of doubtful authorship, printed as by St. Ambrose, see Migne, Patr. Lat. xvii, col. 75] episcopi interim dum officium canitur dicenda a sacerdote " : the prayer before Mass, beg. " Summe sacerdos et uere pontifex," ends imperfectly owing to loss of a quire after f. 8. f. 7 b.
4. Preface (general) beg. imperfectly, and Canon Missæ. The authorities for various points are cited in the margins, e.g. .-(at the Preface) " Sixtus papa constituit sanctus sanctus ad missam cantari", f. 9 ; (at the " Te Igitur") " Clemens papa constituit Te igitur clementissime pater "; (at the " Memento Domine ") "Gelasius papa constituit quod non sit catholicus qui Romani pontificis memoriam in missam pretermittat." Cf. Egerton MS. 2902. A later hand has added, " Et rege nostro N." at the intercession, f. 10 b. See A. Fortescue, The Mass, 1912, p. 329. f. 9.
