FORMULARY of Writs, returns of writs, pleadings and other legal processes, mainly for the County Palatine of Chester. The documents date from 1710 (f. 106 b) to 1764 (f. 161 b), many being copies of actual deeds of Sheriffs of cos. Chest. and Flint, from E[dmund] S[wetenham] [1720-1721] to Robert Leycester [1746-1747]. Interspersed among the forms are notes on various courts and processes, the chief being :- (a) " Instruccions for levying a fine. " f. 38 b ;-
(b) " Some minits of the practice of the Court of Excr at Chester." f. 49 ;-
(c) " An abstract of the rules of the Court of Common Pleas at Lancaster." f. 60 ;-( d) " The gen1 rules of the County Court in Lancashire." f. 62 b;-
(e) " Method of holding and adjourning the Quarter Session in com. Cestr." f. 78 ;-
(f) "An account of the nature of the office of Clerk of the Peace for the county palatine of Chester and what service charge and attendance doth belong to ye same." f. 81 b :-
(g) " The office of the Sheriffs Deputy or Clerk of the County Court for the County Palatine of Chester." f. 86 b ;-
(h) " Fees claimed by and allowed to the Attorneys " (f. 90), " Sollicitors" (f. 91) and Commissioners " (f. 91 b) of the Court of Exchequer at Chester ;-
(i) "The measure of costs agreed to be allow'd by the Prothonitarys in Michaemas term 1733." f. 134 b. An index to the forms is given on ff. 169-178, followed, at the end (f. 178 b), by a recipe for ink.
