1. Two poems of George Meredith, -viz. : (a) Sonnet on the death of Robert Browning, beg. " Now dumb is he who waked the world to speak," first printed in the Pall Mall Gazette, 14th Dec. 1889, and afterwards in Collected Works, vol. xxxi, 1898, p. 288, and Memorial Edition, vol. xxvi, 1910, p. 268. A facsimile of the MS. was issued in the Pall Mall Budget, 19 Dec. 1889, p. 1623. Holograph. Preceded (f. 1) by a covering letter to [W. T.] Stead, editor of the Pall Mall Gazette, 13 Dec. [1889]. f. 2 ;-- (b) " The Labourer," beg " For a Heracles in his fighting ire"; first printed, with an alteration in the last line of verse 1, in the Westminster Gazette, 6 Feb. 1893, p. 10, and afterwards in Last Poems, 1909, p. 15, Collected Works, vol. xxxiii, 1910, p. 210, and Memorial Edition, vol. xxvi, 1910, p. 87. Holograph, with proof. Preceded (f. 3) by a letter to [E. T.] Cook, 3 Feb. 1893, and followed (f. 7) by a letter to the same, 10 Feb. 1893, correcting a misprint and suggesting some further alterations; the misprint (' white ' for ' while,' in the last line of verse 1) was not corrected until the Memorial Edition, and the further alterations have not been made. f. 4.

3. Two letters of Algernon Charles Swinburne to [E. T.] Cook, dat. 15, 24 Aug. [1908], followed by proofs of pp. xlv-li of the introduction to vol. xxxvi (Letters, i, 1827-1869) of The Works of Ruskin, Library Edition, ed. Cook and Wedderburn. The second letter relates to a passage in the proofs (see f. 27), which was subsequently deleted. ff. 20, 24.
