"NAVAL ADMINISTRATION. A letter to the Earl of St. Vincent, K.B. etc. ... by Aristides" : copy (with some scribal blunders) of a pamphlet printed [1804] under this title and said to have been bought up on the day of issue for 3,000 l. See Audi alteram Partem, by " an officer of H.M. Navy," London, 1804, pp. 4, 47 (a pamphlet in which much of the contents is repeated; also Letters and Papers of Sir T. Byam Martin, i. p. 311. "Aristides" is doubtless identical with "Aeschines," author of A few brief Remarks, etc., a tract in defence of Sir Home Popham, published on 1805. They are written apparently in the person of an experienced naval man, not actually connected with Popham; but it is just possible that (as suggested in a letter to The Times , 19 Mar. 1923, p. 8) assistance may have been given by Thomas Love Peacock, who afterwards (1808-1809) became Popham's secretary, and whose writings the copious classical and other quotations slightly recall. Paper ; ff. i + 33. Small folio. Circ. A.D. 1804. On f. i are the initials of T[homas] B[yam] M[artin] and the word "Private," followed by a note by [Sir] W[illiam] Fanshawe Martin, " From among the papers of, my Father, Admiral of the Fleet, Sir T. Byam Martin. I do not know how it came into his possession," and a further note by the same, 11 May 1882, on the pamphlet. Sotheby's sale-cat., 10 Feb. 1920, no. 333.
