CHARTULARY of Fountains Abbey, co. York, Vol. II, containing places beginning D-I. Of the other volumes of this series, compiled in the 15th cent., Vol. 1, A-C, is Cotton MS. Tiberius C. xii ; Vol. III, K-M, is Add. MS. 3777; and Vol. V, Q-Z, is in the Rylands Library, Latin MS. 224 (R. Fawtier, Hand-list of Additions to Latin Manuscripts in the John Rylands Library, 1908-1920 ; 1921, pp. 2, 11). All the deeds of the four known volumes are analysed fully by W. T. Lancaster, Chartulary of Fountains Abbey, 2 vols., 1915. Partly used also iii W. Farrer's Early Yorkshire Charters (1914-1916). The present volume has been described by W. J. Walbran, Memorials of Fountains Abbey, vol. ii, Surtees Soc., 1878, pp. 97-99. Twenty-five leaves, abstracted at an early date, are now at Studley Royal. Of these, six, which should follow f. 171, are headed " Fontes, tabula duodecima," and commence with the
latter part of the second deed relating to Fountains, one leaf, containing the first and beginning of the second charter, being missing,
the last charter, no. 19, is unfinished and the succeeding leaves with the first charters relating to Galphay are also missing. The remaining nineteen leaves at Studley Royal should follow f. 281 ; they contain deeds relating to Hopperton, Horton in Ribblesdale, Ilton, Ingerthorpe and Ilkley, the Horton portion being defective (W. T. Lancaster, op. cit. ii, pp. 850-864). Vellum; ff. iv + 291. 12 1/4 in. x 8 1/4 in. XV cent. Gatherings originally of 8 leaves (xxii9, xxviii6, last 2 ), with catchwords, and some numbered, beginning d. I ; leaves wanting, in addition to those at Studley Royal as above, after ff. 23, 85, 134, 142, 171, 188, 198, 250, 251. The first and second gatherings are misplaced. Two vellum fly-leaves (not consecutive) from a 12th cent. Missal, apparently of York use, containing parts of the Commune Sanctorum (ff. i, iv). Other fly-leaves from the same Missal are in Cotton MS. Tiberius C. xii (consecutive, in the order ff. 331, 2, 3, 332). Contemporary binding, similar to that of the 5th volume of the Chartulary, of wooden boards covered with brown leather, upper and under sides each divided by ten diagonal triple fillets into lozenge and triangular compartments, the former enclosing a square stamp of a doubleheaded eagle, the latter a crocket-like triangular stamp in which is a fanciful design. Probably belonged, with Add. MS. 37770, to William, Lord Howard (1563-1610) and lent by him to Francis Thynne, the antiquary; see his extracts, dated 1593, " Ex libro: Abbathie de fontneis mutuodato a Willelmo Domino howarde (Stowe MS. 1047, ff. 71 b-78 b, 92 b-93 b) relating to places in these two volumes. The name Robert Godfrey is scribbled (f. iii) in an early 17th cent. hand ; for a person of this name, 1619, see W. J. Walbran, op. cit. ii, p. 321 (i.e. 221), n. 1. A note (f. iii b) and index (f. 23 b), dated 15 Dec. 1619, are in the hand of Richard Gascoigne, the antiquary. The volume was lent, 1734, to Dr. Francis Drake (autogr. note f. 100 b), who published extracts in his Eboracum, 1736, p. 180, Appendix, pp. xv, xx-xxii. Belonged, 17th-20th centt., to the Ingilby family, of Ripley Castle, co. York (Hist. MSS. Commission, 6th Report, 1877, App., p. 358), sale-cat., 21 Oct. 1920, lot 55.
