LIBER penes seruos seu famulos," al. " Liber propter seruos of Fountains Abbey, co. York, 1446-1460. Latin. Known as the Memorandum Book of Thomas Swynton, who is styled (f. 113 b) " magister aueriorum," and who became Abbot in 1471. Described by W. J. Walbran, Memorials of Fountains Abbey, ii, Surtees Soc., 1878, p. 104, and printed by J. T. Fowler, Memorials of Fountains Abbey, iii, Surtees Soc., 1918, pp. 93-255 (cf. notes on missing leaves prefixed to the MS., f. i). The contents, which are not arranged in a definite order, include accompts with servants and tenants of the Abbey ; purchases, sales, issues and receipts of live stock and cereals ; payments and receipts by Swynton ; a rental of part of the Wheldrake estate (f. 74 b) ; and a list of servants in the monastery (f. 121 b). A few entries are in English, see f. 118 and (later ?) f. 8 b. A list of places mentioned is given. f. 1. Paper; ff. i + 125. Quarto. A.D. 1446-1460. On the old vellum binding (now Add. MS. 40011 B, f. 15) is written, in an 18th cent. hand, " Fountains .... No. 25." Belonged, 19th-20th cent., to the Ingilby family (Hist. MSS. Commision, 6th Report, App., p. 358), Sotheby's sale-cat., 21 Oct. 1920, lot 57.
