LEGAL REPORTS, ETC., partly (ff. 144-161) in the hand of Sir Thomas Raymond (b. 1627, d. 1683), of Gray's Inn, judge; 1626-1680, n.d. Mostly Law French and Latin. See J. W. Wallace, The Reporters, 4th ed., Boston, 1882. Presented by the Friends of the National Libraries.
Paper; ff. ii+195. Small quarto. 1632-1680. English binding of brown calf, circa 1625, stamped back and front with a single lozenge-shaped design. The modern attribution to Raymond's son, Robert, 1st Baron Raymond, on f. ii is incorrect.
Principal contents:
1. ff. 2-126b. Anonymous reports of law cases, Easter 1626-Easter 1632.
2. ff. 133-143. Reports of 49 cases collected by Sir Richard Hutton (d. 1639), Justice of C.P., Easter 1617-Michaelmas 1638. Copies, representing a selection from the text of his reports as found in Harl. MS. 1636 and Hargrave MS. 22, both of which, however, are preceded by an alphabetical index. Harl. MS. 4813 claims to be a copy of Hutton's own autograph text of his reports, 13 Oct. 1654. It is followed by indexes of subjects and persons, and gives indications of the many cases not included in The Reports of . . . Sir Richard Hutton, Knight . . . , 1656. A similar text, preceded by a contents list, but apparently lacking one folio at the beginning, is now Hargrave MS. 46.
3. ff. 144-159. Reports of Readings by ten Readers at Gray's Inn, 1661-1674, including Sir William Ellis, Justice of C.P., 3 Aug. 1663, Sir Thomas Hardres, 29 Feb. 1664, and Sir William Jones, K.C., Solicitor-General, 3 Aug. 1674, during the period when the Readings were becoming obsolete. See The Pension Book of Gray's Inn, ed. R. J. Fletcher, i, 1901; ii, 1910.
