MAP, entitled: 'A Plate of the Manners of Bayford and Goodmanston in the parishe[s] of Sittingbourne [and Murston] in the Countie of Kent And made by Christofer Saxton in the month of September Ano Domini 1590'. Scale bar of 64 perches to 4 in. [1:3168]. No compass points, but orientation given in margins in Latin. North at top. 740 x 650mm. (sheet); 644 x 457mm. (map). Ink and colour wash on vellum. Shows fields, houses, an orchard, roads and waterways north of the Canterbury road and west of Sittingbourne church and Milton and Sitting-bourne creeks as far as the lane from Snipeshill to Murston. Two decorative cartouches on the right-hand side, of which the upper encloses the title and the lower gives the acreages of lands within the manors. Fair copy. See B.M.Q., xxiii, 1960-1, pp. 65-7, pl. xxix. The map is further discussed in I. M. Evans and
H. Lawrence, Christopher Saxton, Elizabethan Map-maker, Wakefield, 1979,
pp. 85-7, which concludes that 'the question of attribution must remain open'. For a similar map, see Geographical Journal, cxxxviii, 1972, pp. 480-6. Belonged in 1879 to George Smeed of Tunstall, co. Kent. See W. A. Scott Robertson, Sittingbourne and the Names of Lands and Houses in it: their Origin and History, 1879, pp. 10, 22. Presented by C. E. Kenney, Esq.
