SIXTEEN LETTERS, ETC., OF MAURICE RAVEL to Ralph Vaughan Williams, O.M., and his first wife, Adeline; 3 Mar. 1908-19 Sept. 1919. French and (f. 23) translation. The letters refer to Vaughan Williams's G minor string quartet and his song cycle, 'On Wenlock Edge', both written as a result of his studies with Ravel, to Ravel's efforts to have these works performed in Paris, to his visits to England, when he stayed with Vaughan Williams, and to Ravel's 'Rhapsodie espagnole' and 'Daphnis et Chloé'. The letters of 2 Feb., 5 Aug. 1912 (ff. 18-20b) relate to the performance of 'On Wenlock Edge' at a concert of the Société Musicale Indépendante in Paris, 29 Feb. 1912. See M. Kennedy, The Works of Ralph Vaughan Williams, 1964, p. 101. The letter of 7 June 1914 (ff. 23-24b) contains the text of Ravel's letter of protest, in English, to the principal London papers at Diaghilev's production of 'a makeshift arrangement' of 'Daphnis et Chloé' at Drury Lane, 9 June 1914. See The Times, 9, 10 June 1914, and R. Myers, Ravel, 1960,
p. 43. Presented by Mrs Ursula Vaughan Williams.
