COLLECTION OF METRICAL PSALMS, HYMNS AND ANTHEMS, probably compiled by John Guy; early 18th cent. The main hand closely resembles that of John Guy on ff. iib and 10. Presumably compiled in co. Glouc.; see ff. i-iiib. Tenor or tenor and bass parts only, except for item (h) below. Included are:- (a) John Marckant's metrical paraphrase of Ps. 132, with the 'Old Version' tune. See M. Frost, English and Scottish Psalm and Hymn Tunes c. 1543-1677, 1953, no. 150. f. 1b;- (b) The tune 'Cambridge', used as a setting for Ps. 2. Frost, no. 42. f. 2b;- (c) Easter Hymn, 'Christ from the Dead is rais'd and made'. To the tune 'St. Anne's', generally attributed to William Croft. See N. Brady and N. Tate, A Supplement to the New Version of Psalms, 6th ed., 1708, pp. 33, 136. ff. 3b-4;- (d) Hymn tune, 'Sudbury', used as a setting for Ps. 84. f. 3b;- (e) Hymn, 'Awake my soul, awake my eyes', by Jeremiah Clarke. Differs significantly from the text in H. Playford, The Divine Companion, 1701 ed., pp. 29-30. ff. 5b-6;- (f) Setting of the 'Lamentation of a Sinner', beg. 'O Lord turn not thy face from me', differing from that in Brady and Tate, pp. 129-130, 132-3. Words by John Marckant. ff. 10b-11;- (g) One of the canticles of Moses, 'Moses Song'. Music only. f. 12b;- (h) Setting of Ps. 30 for four voices. f. 13b.
