'ELIZABETH OF HUNGARY': the unfinished prose Life, by Charles Kingsley, intended as a wedding gift to his wife. Autograph; illustrated by the author. Prefixed (f. ii) is a fragmentary draft of an account of its production, in Mrs Kingsley's hand; see also her account in Charles Kingsley: His Letters and Memories of His Life, 1877, i, pp. 66, 67, 97. The work finally appeared in the form of a drama entitled The Saint's Tragedy, 1848. Paper; ff. ii+ 18. Large quarto. After A.D. 1842 (watermarks 1843). Penand-ink and pencil drawings throughout (mostly incomplete). Belonged successively to the author's wife, Frances Eliza Kingsley (initials on cover, laid down on f. i), and his daughter, Mrs Mary St Leger Harrison (Sotheby's sale-cat., 14, 15 Dec. 1925, lot 211).
