Three chapters for an unpublished second volume, continuing the story of his life from the point (his appointment by Lord John Russell as Consul-General at Leipzig, July 1860) at which he left it at the close of his Reminiscences of Thirty-five Years of my Life (John Murray, 1895), for the original MS. of which see Add. MSS. 44059, 44060, and fulfilling, in part, the promise made on p. 433 of that work. The MS. gives a first-hand and detailed account of his life at Leipzig (including a meeting with Constantine Tischendorf, ff. 100, 101) from the date of his appointment to his betrothal to Fräulein Asta von Barby, step-daughter of Otto von Holtzendorff, at Gotha, 5 Jan. 1861.
