PEERAGE of England to 1605. Begins imperfectly (f. 5)'Harrold Lord Sudley' and ends 'James Hayes kt created Lord Hayes by kinge James' [1605]. The compilation is based on that of Robert Cooke, Clarenceux, but differs widely in the order of the creations and has much additional biographical material, some of it drawn apparently from Camden; e.g. on f. 7b, under 'Robert Earle of Moritonis', occurs the phrase 'all this reporteth Cambden, but it is not in the originall'. The same phrase occurs in the same entry in Harl. MS. 2041, f. 159, with which the present MS. in its earlier portion agrees most closely in order and phrasing. The compilation is not the revision of Glover and Lant (cf. Royal MS. 18 C. xvii and Add. MS. 4959) and has no independent value. Creations during the reign of Edward VI are also wanting (the MS. appears to be defective between ff. 45 and 46). Inscribed at the end: 'Finis, Richard Thomas.' The peerage is preceded (f. 1) by notes of purchases at Chester, 20 Jan. 1639/40-,, and a few commonplaces, also (ff. 2-3) by a statement of arrears of rent due at Michaelmas 1639 for lands at Aberdaron, etc., co. Camarv., payable to John Griffith of Lleyn, co. Carnarv. [d. 1642], and a list (f. 4) of 'Cheiffe Rents of Heyrdreff [Hirdre, co. Camarv.] for the yeere 1639'. Paper; ff- 48. Folio. xvii cent. Presented by Viscount Combermere.
