HUMBERT OF ROMANS (d. 1277), Exposition of the Rule of St Augustine and Commentary on the Constitutions of the Friars Preachers, in Latin. For details of his life and works see F. Heintke, Humbert von Romans der fünfte Ordensmeister der Dominikaner, 1933 (Historische Studien, ed. E. Eberling, Heft 222). Both works are printed in Humberti de Romanis Opera de Vita Regulari, ed. J. J. Berthier, 2 vols., Rome, 1888-1889. As follows:-
(1) 'Incipit prologus expositionis regule beati Augustini secundum magistrum Vmbertum, quintum magistrum Ordinis', beg. 'Viris religiosis non modicum expedit'. Frequently printed, but usually in an abbreviated and distorted form (cf. Heintke, op. cit., p. 82, note 262). ff. 1-238b.
(2) 'Incipit. Prologus. magistri Humberti. super constitutiones fratrum predicatorum', beg. 'Ea que subscripta sunt'. The work remained a fragment, covering less than a twentieth part of the ground (cf. Heintke, op. cit., p. 89). ff. 239-296b. Followed by a table of chapters (f. 297). Paper; ff. i + 300. Folio. XVI-XVII centt. Written in several Italian hands.
