TRANSCRIPT of'A Journal of Events of my own Times' kept by Lady Elizabeth Foster, wife of John Thomas Foster, M.P.; 5 Nov. 1788-10 Jan. 1789, 17 [July]-6 Sept. [1789]. The diarist (d. 1824) was the daughter of Frederick Augustus Hervey, 4th Earl of Bristol, and married, in 1809, as her second husband and his second wife, William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire, with whose family she had long been intimate. The first section of the journal (ff. 1 -22b) records George III's first attack of madness and the consequent political intrigues from the point of view of Devonshire House; the second (ff. 23-44b) notes the day-to-day repercussions of the French Revolution on society at Spa. Paper; ff. 44. Quarto. Circ. 1822 (so watermark). Belonged to Sir Augustus Vere Foster, Bart., of Glyde Court (Sotheby's sale-cat., 13-18 Feb. 1928, lot 225).
