TRACTS, in Latin, by Nicholas Jacquier (Nicolas Jaquerii), of Dijon, Dominican Friar and Inquisitor (d. 1472), and others, viz.:-
(1) 'Tractatus de Calcatione daemonum': a tract on the subjection of evil spirits, by Nicholas Jacquier. Wanting first leaf, the second fol. (now f. 1) beg. 'de causa'; ends 'zizaniam de agro dominico extirpandam'. See Quétif- Echard, Script. ord. praedic., i, 847-848, and for other MSS., J. Van den Gheyn, Cat. des MSS. de la Bibl. Roy. de Belgique, iii, 1903, nos. 1709 and 1710. ff. 1-18b.
(2) Tract against wizardry, written in 1458 by Nicholas Jacquier, beg. 'Flagellum fascinariorum scilicet hereticorum maleficorum'. Printed with the title Flagellum haereticorum fascinariorum, Frankfort, 1581, from which extensive passages are quoted by Joseph Hansen, Quellen und Untersuchungen zur Geschichte des Hexenwahns und der Hexenverfolgung im Mittelalter, pp. 134- 145. A passage comprising the end of chap. xiii and beginning of chap. xiv (p. 91, 1. 22 to p. 95, 1. 4 of the 1581 edition) is omitted after f. 51, 1. 7 from the end. ff. 19-81.
(3) Treatise on games from the moral and legal aspects, consisting mainly of extracts from Canonists and Civilians, beg. 'Ludus nedum taxillorum sed ecia[m] ludus alearum'; ends 'maritum vide ibi; Explicit tractatus ludi compositus per dominum Henricum Boyc'. The attribution to Boyc (al. Boyic, Bohic, Bouhic, Boich), presumably the author of a published commentary on the Decretals of Gregory IX (Fabricius, Bibl. Lat., iii, 1754, p. 211), appears impossible. With other authorities, the latest being Ambrosius de Vignate (ff. 1460), he is quoted in the third person ('reprobat', f. 82; 'vult', f. 92b), whereas the author speaks of himself in the first person. ff. 82-94b.
(4) Quaestiones on hypothetical cases, of Civil Law 'de molendinis', beg. 'Molendinum habeo in flumine et habui longo tempore'. Imperf. owing to the loss of a quire after f. 95. ff. 94 b-95 b.
(5) 'Spiritualis mappa mundi' (so the title of the printed edition, 1573) by Jean Germain, Bishop of Châlons-sur-Saéne, beg. imperf. (through loss of a quire) 'ad terram Chanaam'; ends 'Hic nascitur sanctus Fulssyus et migrauit in Galiis confessor'. Copies of a French version, with dedicatory epistle to Philip le Bon, Duke of Burgundy,, 1449, are in Add. MS. 21916 and Paris, Bibl. Nat. MS. fonds francais 13235. ff. 96-159. Paper; ff. iii+ 166. 8½ in. x 6 7/8 in. Written probably in Eastern France. Late XV cent. Gatherings of 12 leaves (i wanting the first leaf), numbered, with catchwords, throughout, one gathering missing between h and k. Art. 5, which is in a different hand and has different rulings, has also a separate numbering of quires by bifolia on the verso of alternate leaves: it has the same watermark, however, as the rest of the volume (see Briquet, Les Filigranes, iii, 9746). Normally 32 lines to the page, except art. 5 which has 31. Two vellum fly-leaves contain respectively fragments of (a) divorce proceedings at Besancon, in Latin, late 15th cent. (f. i), and (b) an assignat de mariage at Dole, in French, 30 Sept. 1350 (f. ii). A photograph of the spine of the original binding is included (f. iii).
