'THE REVENGE, a Ballad of the Fleet': a setting of the poem of Alfred, Lord Tennyson, for chorus and orchestra, in full score, by Charles Villiers Stanford (op. 24). Autograph. Published 1886. Lord Tennyson's signature is on f. 2. The composer's instructions in blue pencil and red ink occur throughout. Signed and dated at the end 'C. V. Stanford, January 11, 1886. Farrinford [sic] and London'. The work was first performed at the Leeds Festival of 1886 under the direction of the composer. Cf. Brit. Mus. Quart., iii, 1928- 1929, p. 77. Paper; ff. viii + 49. A.D. 1886. Folio. Inserted at the beginning are a number of documents, including a letter of Stanford (f. ii) to the Leeds Festival Committee, 11 Jan. I885 [ I886 ?] and a Privy Council warrant (f. iv) to Lord Buckhurst for the reimbursement to George Furber of £50 for the use of William Dymocke, 10 Dec. 1601 (Acts of the Privy Council, 1601-1604, p. 421). Belonged to Guy Stanford, son of the composer (Sotheby's sale-cat., 16-19 July 1928, lot 406).
