LOS BALCONES DE MADRID: a comedy in Spanish in three 'tornadas' or acts, by Tirso de Molina, pseudonym of Gabriel Tellez. Beg. 'Que tantos estremos hizo'. The text differs in small points from the printed edition by J. E. Hartzenbusch, Comedias Escogidas de Fray Gabriel Tellez, 2nd ed., 1850, pp. 556-571 (Vol. v of Rivadeneyra's Biblioteca de Autores Españoles), but agrees with the copy in Add. MS. 10334, ff. 178-202, both MSS. for example omitting the line 'atropellar imposibles' (ff. 10, 190 respectively) after 'con afectos apacibles' in Act 2, Scene 4 (Hartzenbusch, op. cit., p. 563). A purer text exists in a MS. in the Biblioteca Nacional, Madrid, mentioned by E. Cotarelo y Mori in his introduction to vol. ii (1907, p. v) of Comedias de Tirso de Molina in the Nueva Biblioteca de Autores Españoles. The same (or a similar) MS. belonged to the Duke of Osuna (see Hartzenbusch, op. cit., p. xliii, and Cotarelo y Mori, Tirso de Molina: Investigaciones bio-bibliográficas, 1893, pp. 136, 150-151). Paper (watermark: Capellades); ff. ii + 20. 8½ in. x 6 in. XVIII cent. Gatherings of 4 leaves, lettered A-E; double columns; catchwords on every verso page. On the label (f. i) and within the original front cover (f. i b) is the number 50. Inserted (f. ii) is a letter from H[enry] Thomas, Deputy Keeper of Printed Books (knt. I946), to [J. P.] Gilson, Keeper of Manuscripts, 23 Aug. 1928. Transferred from the Department of Printed Books.
