Rowe COLLECTIONS, Vol. XI (For Vols. I-X see Add. MSS. 39912- 39921.) Tracings of encaustic tiles, collected at various dates in the 19th century, and with a title-page dated 1881, by the Rev. George Rowe (d. 1882), Principal of the Training College, York, and one of the Hon. Secretaries of the Yorkshire Architectural Society. At the end (ff. 223-224) is an index of places. Many of the tracings bear initials other than those of Rowe himself, presumably those of the persons who supplied them. The volume is dedicated to Rowe's four daughters, who assisted him in the colouring of the tracings. A similar volume of tracings is Add. MS. 39921 (Rowe Collections, vol. X). At f. 2 b is a lithographed plate from the compiler's article, 'On Encaustic Tiles', in Associated Architectural Societies' Reports and Papers, XV, part i, 1879, pp. 18-26, followed (ff. 5-8) by the printed text of the article. The names of places are given in the Index to this Catalogue. Paper; ff. 225. 11 in. x 8 in. XIX cent. Bequeathed by the compiler but retained for her lifetime by his daughter, Mrs George Saunders.
