Jones was the East India Company's Resident at Basra (1784-1794) and Bagdad (1797-1806), and was sent by the British Government as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Persia (see his Account of the Transactions of His Majesty's Mission to the Court of Persia, in the years 1807-1811, 1834).
