THREE VERSE ANTHEMS for solo voices, chorus and organ accompaniment, in score, by Jo[hn] Weldon, organist of the Chapel Royal, viz.:-
(1) 'O be Joyfull in God', n.d. ff. 1-8b;-(2) 'O Sing unto the Lord', 9 Jan. 1705,. ff. 9-19b;-(3) 'Rejoyce in the Lord O ye rightious', said to have been composed for the Thanksgiving, 17 Feb. 170.8/9, for the success of the English forces (A. Bayly, Collection of Anthems used in H.M. Chapel Royal, 1769). ff. 20-25. Autograph. Apparently unpublished, though all are included among his works in M. B. Foster, Anthems and Anthem Composers, 1901, p. 87. References to singers of the Chapel Royal are given on ff. 9-21 b passim, viz.: Mr [Richard] E[lford], Mr [John] C[hurch], Mr [Samuel] Weely, Mr [Daniel?] W[illiams?] and Mr [George] Lay[e]. On f. 12 a few bars, completing the unfinished Organ Ritornello on f. 11b, have been added in pencil, probably by James William Windsor. A printed account of the manuscript by Ralph Griffin is prefixed (ff. i-vi). Paper; ff. vi + 25. Folio. Early XVIII cent. The MS. formed pp. 175-190 and pp. 209-241 of a volume labelled 'Manuscript Anthems-Autographs', owned successively by Dr Samuel Arnold, Joseph Corfe, Arthur Thomas Corfe, James William Windsor (?), William Alexander Barret and, lastly, Francis Ernest Horace Joyce Barrett, at whose death it was sold (Hodgson's sale-cat., 25-26 June 1925, lot 416) and divided up as described in the printed account.
