PASLEY PAPERS: correspondence, letter-books, diaries, and note-books of Gen. Sir Charles William Pasley (1780-1861), K.C.B., R.E. The material was used for a life of Pasley by Col. J. C. Tyler, now Add. MS. 41766 above. From 1799 to 1809 Pasley served as an Engineer officer in Minorca, Malta, Naples, Sicily, Spain, Denmark and Holland. In 1810 he published an Essay on the Military Policy and Institutions of the British Empire, which attracted widespread attention; and in 1812 he was made first director of the establishment later known as the School of Military Engineering, Chatham, with the rank of Brevet-Major. He relinquished this position in 1841 and was promoted Major-general; Inspector-general of Railways 1841- 1846; K.C.B. 1846; Colonel-Commandant of the Royal Engineers 1853; General 1860. Cf. Brit.
