DIURNAL of the use of the Benedictine Congregation of St Justina of Padua (known after 1504 as the Cassinese Congregation), apparently from the Abbey of St Mary at Florence (the Badia), see art. I. Contents:-
(1) Calendar, in red and black, similar to that printed in the Breuiarium monasticum secundum ritum et morem monachorum ordinis sancti Benedicti de obseruantia casinensis congregationis: alias sancte iustine, Venice, 1542, and the composite Cassinese-Olivetan calendar in H. Grotefend, Zeitrechnung des deutschen Mittelalters, ii, pt. 2, pp. 8-11, with the following additional entries in red, indicative of the MS.'s place of origin: SS. Zenobius, Bp., 'Duplex minus' (25 May), and Reparata, 'xijl'.' (8 Oct.), the patrons of Florence; St Proculus, Bp. [of Bologna], 'xijl'.' (1 June), whose church, 'quae est iuxta portam monasterii', was confirmed to the Badia by Pope Alexander II in 1067-1068, see L. Schiaparelli, Le Carte del Monastero di S. Maria in Firenze, i, p. 170, and Jaffé, Regesta Pontificum Romanorum, 2nd ed., no. 4734; 'Dedicacio altarium sancte Marie De Florencia. Dominica secunda Junij. Duplex maius'; St John Gualbert [founder of the Order of Vallombrosal, ' xijl'.' (12 July); and St Minias, 'xijl'.' (25 Oct.). The entries relating to SS. Zenobius and Proculus and the dedication of the altars have been partially erased. ff. 1-12b;-(2) Tables of special antiphons before Christmas, as in the 'Tabula Parisina' prefixed to the printed breviary of 1542. ff. 14-24;-
(3) 'Incipit diurnum secundum consuetudinem monachorum congregationis sancte Justine': Temporale, Advent-twenty-fourth Sunday after Pentecost. ff.25-120;-(4) Psalter, with antiphons,etc.,followed(ff.217-236b) by Hymnal and (ff. 236b-240b) by'Letanie secundum morem monasticum'. Among the hymns are two (ff. 231b, 232) addressed to St Justina, 'Phebus astris cum omnibus' (Chevalier, Repertorium Hymnologicum, no. 14899; Dreves, Analecta Hymnica, iv, p. 166) and 'Justina, que Christi martyr' (Chevalier, no. 9918; Dreves, iv, p. 165); in the Litany is included, in addition to invocations of Cassinese and Florentine saints, the further one (f. 238b), 'vt ciuitatem istam cum omni populo suo regere et conseruare digneris'. Wants two leaves after f. 164. ff. 121-240b;-(5) Proprium sanctorum, SS. Saturninus- Catharine, ending with the office for the dedication of a church. Includes offices for SS. Zenobius (f. 271b), Proculus (f. 272) and John Gualbert (f. 284b) in addition to the Cassinese saints who appear in the Calendar. ff. 241b-317;-(6) Commune sanctorum, wanting leaves after ff.. 327, 333. ff. 317-333b;-(7) Psalms, etc., for Matins on Sundays, omitted from the Psalter (art. 4). Wants leaves at the end. ff. 334-340b. Vellum; ff. 340. 2¾ in. x 2.1/8 in. xv cent. Gatherings of 10 leaves, with catchwords (il2, ii12, xii6); xvii wants 5, 6, xxv has 3 cancelled, xxxiv wants 1, 8-10, xxxv wants 8-10. Decorative initials and partial borders in gold and colours in Italian style, badly cropped; other initials in red and blue. Rubrics. Gold-tooled panel binding of brown leather, with leather thongs and brass clasps opening below; 16th cent., perhaps Italian.
