FOUR SERMONS Of St Bernardino of Siena (d. i444), in Latin, written by Thomas Jacobus de Madijs in I438 (see below):-
(1) Three sermons for Advent on the text Sobrie et iuste et pie uiuamus (Tit. ii. 12) forming the Tractatus de Vita Christiana (so the explicit, f. 31). Printed in S. Bemardini Senensis ... Opera omnia, Venice, 1745, iii, pp. 1-18. For other MSS. and early printed editions (including the autograph of an early version of the work, Siena, Comunale MS. U. III. I) see Pacetti, De S. Bernardini Senensis operibus, 1947, pp. 28-31. The sermons, which are preceded by a Prologue beg. (after the text) 'Verba sunt apostoli scribentis ad Titum in 20 capitulo', themselves begin respectively 'Prima quidem uirtus Christiane uite' (ff. 1b-9b), 'In superioribus iam uidimus' (ff. 9b-22) and 'Vltimo post iam dicta' (ff. 22-31). The first sermon omits the final sentence (beg. 'Proinde Bernardus ait') of art. 1, cap. 2 of the printed text. ff. 1-3I.
(2) A Lenten sermon on the Lord's Prayer, beg. 'Cum oratis dicite [Luke xi. 2] ... sic enim Lucas'. Identical, after the introduction, with Sermon no. 6 (for Feria Quinta post Cinerem) of Bernardino's 'Quadragesimale de Christiana Religione', printed in Opera, 1745, i, pp. 23-28 and in S. Bernardini Senensis ... opera omnia ... studio et cura PP. Collegii S. Bonaventurae, i, 1950, pp. 62-75, on the text Domine puer meus (Matt. viii. 6). For other MSS. and printed editions see the latter, pp. xx sqq. and Pacetti, op. cit., pp. 3-15. ff. 31-40. Vellum: ff. ii+ 40. 6¼ in.x 4.3/8 in. A. D. 1438. Gatherings of ten leaves, with catchwords. Written in double cols. of 28 lines. Initials and paragraphs in red. The spelling 'x' for 's' occurs occasionally, e.g. 'sccaxionem' (f. 21b). Colophon (f. 40b) reads 'Deo gratias. Amen. Die xxiiio mensis Aprilis 1438 hora fere XXIIIa Ego Thomas Jacobus de Madijs de Viglo hoc opus expleui ad honorem omnipotentis dei ac beate eius Marie Uirginis matris. Amen'. Sotheby's sale-cat., 30 June-2 July 1930, lot 117.
