SCATTERGOOD COLLECTIONS. Vol. VI. Commonplace-book, consisting mainly of extracts from legal, scientific and historical works, of H[enry?] Consett, probably to be identified with the author of The Practice of the Spiritual or Ecclesiastical Courts, 1685. Latin and English. Included are:-
(1) 'Forma vel modus practicandi in Curiis Ecclesiasticis prout colligitur ex libris Actorum qui facti et usi sunt tam in Consistoriis quam in Curiis Scaccarii et Prxrogativx Archiepiscopatus Eborum. . . ', 1674. ff. 4-5.
(2) 'De Curiis Ecclesiasticis Quae celebrantur ... intra Civitatem Londinensem': extracts from F. Clarke, Praxis in Curiis Ecclesiasticis, 1666, divided into twenty-nine tituli. ff. 6-20b.
(3) 'Miscellania e diversis lectionibus', mainly abstracts from the works of Robert Boyle, viz.:-New Experiments Physico-Mechanical touching the Spring of the Air (ff. 21-22b), and Reconciliation of Specific Medecines (ff. 23-28), The Advantages of the use of Simple Medecines (f. 28 b), and of William Harvey, Exercitationes de generatione animalium (ff. 30-31). ff. 21-3I.
(4) 'Threnodia Carolina': an account of the last two years of the life of King Charles I, a version of the treatise by Sir Thomas Herbert, 1st Bart., first printed in 1678 in a work with that title (Watt, Bibl. Brit., i, p. 486; Fea, Memoirs of the Martyr King, pp. ix-x, 74-153) and reprinted at various times. In a preface (f. 32) Consett states that he himself had made five fair copies from Herbert's own rough original, one of which he sent to Sir William Dugdale who presented it to Charles II, by whom it had been returned with an engraving of Charles I inserted. This latter copy is perhaps now Harley MS. 4705, and in that case would be, together with another formerly in the possession of Mrs Emily Alartin-Elmunds, in Consett's autograph, and not that of Herbert as suggested by Fea, op. cit. pp. ix-x. The version in the present MS. was reconstituted by Consett partly from memory and partly from extracts published in Anthony à Wood's Athenae and Fasti Oxonienses (see 32). ff. 32-52. Paper; ff. ii + 54. Folio. Circ. 1700. On f. 1 is a coat of arms in tincture, gu. a fess chequy arg. and az. between three fleurs de lys or, with the name Consett attached. Below is a note 'Watsons Armes. Argent a chevern between 3 martlets sable as many crescents Or', with an uncompleted sketch of the arms below. A note (f. i) by B. P. Scattergood states that the MS. was given to him in 1909 by Arthur R[eginald] Chorley, of Leeds, who had discovered it in the offices of Nelson, Barr and Co., solicitors, of Leeds.
