'THE GOLDEN TREASURY of the Best Songs and Lyrical Poems in the English Language', selected by Francis Turner Palgrave; Oct. 1860- May 1861 (see note, f. 1). The original MS. from which the book was printed under the above title in 1861. Most of the poems are in Palgrave's autograph; the remainder were copied by amanuenses or cut from printed books. At f. 2 is a note by Palgrave on the assistance which he received in making the selection from George Miller (for whom see, at f. i, letter from'The Times', 15 Oct. 1930) Thomas Woolner, the sculptor, and Tennyson. At the head of each poem are various symbols (for explanation see f. 15), usually initialled, representing the opinion of some or all of the four collaborators., Brief notes by Palgrave relating largely to Tennyson's opinions of the poems occur throughout, together with a few comments by Tennyson and Miller. At f. 83 are six mottoes, in Latin and Greek, which Palgrave wished to place at the beginning of the whole work and each of the four books. The MS. is described in Brit. Mus. Quart., v, 1930-1931, pp. 85-87, pl. xliii; 'The Times', 13 Oct. 1930 p. 17; and by B. Ifor Evans in The Times Literary Supplement, 1932, p. 941. Paper; in two vols., ff. i + 1-229, and ff. 230-437. 13 in. x 10 in. A.D. 1860- 1861. Given by Palgrave to his daughter, Annora, in 1894 (see inscription, f. 1). Presented by her sister, Miss Gwenllian Florence Palgrave.
